The OPPO BDP-80 Blu-ray Disc Player is designed to be a stand-alone universal disc player and a digital audio/video transport. It is based on the same decoder chipset and similarly optimized firmware as our award-winning BDP-83 model. Like the BDP-83, the BDP-80 offers universal playback of Blu-ray, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD and many other disc/media formats. The BDP-80 is incredibly well suited as a digital transport to feed into an external video processor, a high-end A/V receiver or display device with built-in video processing. The BDP-80 is also recommended to be used as a stand-alone Blu-ray/DVD/CD-player that offers higher video and audio quality than many mass-market players.

For analog audio output, the BDP-80 features a configurable 7.1-channel output that can be set as 7.1-channel, 5.1-channel or stereo. The BDP-83 has a dedicated stereo output in addition to the 7.1-channel output. The Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) and analog driving stage in the BDP-80 is a tried-and-true design previously used in our flagship DV-983H up-converting DVD player. Although not as sophisticated as the BDP-83 and BDP-83 Special Edition, this design enables the BDP-80 to be an excellent audio player at a very affordable price. For digital audio output, the BDP-80 and BDP-83 have very similar capabilities and performances, and either can be an excellent audio source for an audio processor or A/V receiver via HDMI and coaxial/optical connections.

In summary, the choice between BDP-80 and BDP-83 depends on the specific needs of the customer. The BDP-83 is recommended where the best possible video and audio performance is required. The BDP-80 excels in a home theater where an accurate digital transport is optimal, and it matches well with other home theater devices that offers quality video processing and audio D/A conversion. Good point. Their sales must be lagging! Blu-rays have broken the 100 dollar price point (remember when DVD players did the same. I do...about a decade or less ago...the culprit? APEX! Made a market killing...shamed everyone else into dropping prices so as not to lose market share.

I still run the Apex somewhere in the house? But have moved on to bigger and better things in the main AV system.

Oppo needs to sell 'cheap' otherwise they're only a 'niche' market and the public will buy what they KNOW: Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, etc. And the Wal-mart special Magnavox!

I agree but some companies price their products way too high like the Denon universal player and Pioneer 09fd. That's ridiculous to pay over $1500 for a player when the Oppo can do it all for $499.

I agree that the Pio is better overall compared to the Oppo but not by a great margin and not enough to justify being around $1000+ more. I was told by a Pio dealer that you don't need a Pio 09FD unless you have a huge projector screen 100+ inches or larger to see some differences in picture detail.

I know McIntosh is coming out with a bluray player that is $8000 and it better make you breakfast in bed to justify that cost.
