Mounting a hard drive on it's side doesn't hurt anything. HP's and Compaq's did this a lot. A lot of servers with hot swaps are on there side.

indeed. the orientation of the drive itself is varied. the cooling system is designed around the orientation not vise versa meaning there isnt one cooling pattern for all mounting orientations

man i didnt call any body and idiot. if someone has the experience that has been portrayed then it should have been obvious to the most casual observer what my reference was. to respond in a fashion that implies my post made no sense shows either ignorance of indifference. neither of which is respectful and could in most cases be considered disrepectful given your position. i 've taken your advice and searched names vs. pics vs. screen names and really all i have to say is there isnt one of "yall" that would speak to me face to face as you speak to me here. fabricate text as you will and make the story up as you go along but its in the type and its undeniable. sorry to have ruffled the echelons feathers that wasnt my intention. ultimately my position stands... if you mount a piece of equipment in a fashion different than designed you may run into performance issues. specifically cooling.
Have you been drinking again? Just curious because it seems you have been awfully angry over some very little things. And what the hell does pics and screen names have to do with speaking to you differently face to face?

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

No cooling system to really speak of except vents in the front and just the PS fan pulling the heat out of the case. I have built, repaired more computers than I care to remember. Have fun.

Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

This what you said in an earlier post.

(i 've taken your advice and searched names vs. pics vs. screen names and really all i have to say is there isnt one of "yall" that would speak to me face to face as you speak to me here.)

I was curious as to what the hell does pics and screen names have to do with how someone would talk to you.

Not so sure...... but, my DVR throws a ton of heat (hotter than my AVR).
Could probably cook pancakes on it.

The heat dissipation from the electronics may cause component overheating, possibly hard drive also, if turned on side. I wouldn't consider it an option with my unit. What type DVR are we talking here? YMMV

Hopefully it doesn't look like this inside:)

If you mount it on it's side, mount a rotisserie on it and light up some ribs! It'll be hot for sure.

There are no fans in this unit actually. The whole top and sides are vented. The bottom, front and back panel are all sealed off. I found a couple pictures. One of the guts and the other with the case on it.

Either way, this is a brand new box since my previous one died Saturday. And no, the one that died was not because of hard drive failure, something on the board finally went kaput. I was having intermittent problems and had a tech out Friday and he mentioned he thought the DVR was causing the problems and that he thought it would be going out sometime fairly soon. I waited to get him to change it out because I was going to try to get a few programs saved off the hard drive before getting it switched out and it died 24 hours later. AT&T came through and had a tech out Sunday afternoon to deliver my new box and make sure everything worked.

I wouldn't hesitate to put that unit on its side, HDD up for example.

+1 on that. the full perforation on the top cover allow for convection and no "pocket" at the top to trap air.

In my case, I actually have the hard drive down because of where the remote sensor is. If I had it on the other side I would have to raise the TV another inch or two and I really don't want to have to do that.

Glad to see you two dorks can get along!!!! Have a nice day fellas.

I don't believe it will be a problem either way given all that free air available for the heat to rise thru the unit.
