I thought about having the GFA-565 mono amps repaired. There is a repairman on-line who I believe could fix these amps in his sleep. The last time I checked, the repair was $190.00 each and he gives a short warranty period. The price does not include shipping both ways. I guess it would cost when all done around $625.00 to return them to fully operational and I do have the original boxes.

The GFA-565s are rated down to 2 ohms as 850w into 2. They have ten sets of bipolar transistors and a 1.2 KVA toroidal. At the time, Adcom wasn't big on protection circuitry besides fuses so when you turn them on, you do get a slight thump in the speakers. I've witnessed their current wise capability whereas I saw a sales guy hooking up to a set of speakers with the amps on and I saw sparks!

If the Emotiva XPA-1s work for me, I'll most likely sell the 565 mono amps at a good price so someone else can repair themselves or send off to repair so they have a short warranty period. I'd even ship to the repairman for the buyer with tracking to save on shipping.

It's basically amounts to a decision based upon the sound quality of the Emotiva XPA-1 mono blocks' sound versus the sound I'm currently accustomed to. I hope it is a sound decision...LOL-pun intended

Hey man! If you do get the 565s repaired look into Musical Concepts ugrades for them. I had a pair modded with their premier upgrade and they sounded really great.

Adcom 585's and 565's had a bad run of caps and they fail prematurely and when the electrolytics get all over the driver board parts and PCB there are all kinds of issues and cleaning them is a huge PITA.

Most likely that;s your issue and if a tech is going to do it right it's very time consuming to clean the boards. Adcom no longer manufacturer's the boards so the only option is to strip it of parts, clean the boards and re-populate the boards. The boards have to be spotless, with absolutely no trace of electrolytics or you will have problems. Well worth it, IMO despite the cost. Not all of these two models were affected but many were. Plus after the repair you can get more on the used market since the new owner won't have to worry.

Where the hell do you live that it costs $245 to ship a couple of amps .

I guess even $50 ea X 4 (each way) = $200 so $245 isn;t out of line...........at first I thought that was a large number, I guess not when one does the math

No problem just trying to be honest as best I can be! Shipping could be cheaper.

BTW, if all goes well, I'll post them later for sale with pictures to include with the top covers off. I will say they are physically in very nice shape. I still have the original plastic covers, foam, and as said, boxes.

I owed the XPA-1's for awhile. I do not know how the adcom's sound but I found the XPA-1's are very forward in their tone and aggressive to me. For me they worked great for HT as I didn't care as much but any two channel listening I didn't care for them.
Let me know what your impressions are over the Adcom's as I'm curious as to what you think.

Kmart is one of the many "unauthorized" sellers listed on the ADCOM web site. Buyer beware even if you could find those pieces in an actual Kmart store...highly doubtful.

just remember.. kmart is not an authorized Adcom dealer so you don't get the adcom warranty if purchase from them.. I believe this has been discussed before.

Interesting. I would think a company of the size of Kmart would have a higher standard in ensuring products that they carry covered by manufacturers warranty.

Here is an official e-mail response I received today from an Adcom representative concerning purchasing Adcom products from K-Mart on-line:

"No, K-Mart is NOT an authorized re-seller. If you buy from them
the warranty will not be valid."

I'm pretty sure that was determined months ago.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Well, that was definitely before I joined this site, maybe before others joined, and possibly eluded other readers on any post related on this subject of K-Mart & Adcom so- Call it a re-confirmation.

Well, confirmation just received by this former Adcom purchaser (me) that I should have 223 lbs of Emotiva audio electronics delivered to the house tomorrow.

    Again, two XPA-1s, an ERC-1, and USP-1.

BTW, I'm aware of mixed reviews out there on Emo in cyber world but I'll be sure to give it all a military style inspection as I did in a former life as an avionics black box QA inspector. Then testing and evaluation in the hot mock-up!....LOL

    GWV,

If you are interested in getting the Adcoms repaired, and you are in NC.....I'd get ahold of Alex at the Analog Store in Raleigh. I've dealt with him and he's a super guy. Not 'cheap' but not unreasonable and his work is first rate.

    Good luck with the Emo...

Actually I'm more of a Polkie or Pioneer fan than being an Emoette.
I own substantially more Polk Audio and Pioneer equipment than Emotiva.
    I like them all.
Just looked through your sig... What are you doing with all of those LSis?? That's got to be 2 systems, no?
