    My receiver did the same thing when you say it went into a protection mode. The problem was the wire connection to the speaker was not as good as it needed to be. Check your speaker wire connections to the CC, and try again. It is just possible that the receiver is detecting a short in the connection to the speaker and will not allow the unit to play sound. At least try it and see.

    let me check my stock of extra boxes, that i no longer have speakers for, psw404,rti28, r15, nope no extra Csi40 box ... :D

    I really do have those extra boxes though..

    This may sound stupid but I would call around to the local Circuit City stores and ask if they have an extra one (maybe from one of their displays). Or you could go and by a new Csi40 at CC then return it without the box. You would still get a full refund.
