how is this receiver...ive been looking for something to replace my denon avr 3806 ...i only use the processor part so im not really concerned about the power...would this be an upgrade?Theater: Epson 8500ub, Elite 120" screen, Lsic, Lsi25, Lsifx, SVS Pc12plus, SVS Pc12plus, Emotiva Xpa-5, Denon Avr3311ci, Sony Bdps1000es

Honestly I am kinda confused by the 3806's specs, it has HDMI, but doesn't appear to be able to decode the new HD codecs? Also, kinda confused as to whether or not it has the Burr Brown DAC's? If it doesn't then the 707 may be a bit of an "upgrade". The 707 also has more HDMI in's than the 3806, and I know for sure that it will decode the new HD codecs, and has the Burr Brown DAC's. Hopefully someone will be able to give you more info.

FYI, it's currently on back order for 2-3 weeks. But, if you go to your local Best Buy, they will reluctantly match the price.

Amazon has the Onkyo-TX-SR707 for $500 shipped.
Is the 707 @ $500 shipped that much better than the 607 @ $350 shipped? -
I'd definitely get the 707 because that can be used as a Pre-amp in the future, the 607 cannot. The 707 also has THX certification, better DACs, more features and a bit more power, etc.
But the most important thing is that it has pre-outs and that alone makes it more valuable....for example, when you try to resell it when and if you decide to upgrade!

I have an 805 myself, and while the new 707 series has a lot of new features...it does NOT have an amp section that is as good as the 805...pound for pound the 805 was the bargain of this last decade from Onkyo...look at the 1007 series if you want that kind of power in an Onkyo AVR.
But I'm not sure how much of a difference that would make if you were not using the Onkyo's internal amps..as a pre...I'd guess the 707 is very good.

Completely agree....nothing great when using the power section but used as processor only I'm not sure you can beat it in cost to valueTheater: Epson 8500ub, Elite 120" screen, Lsic, Lsi25, Lsifx, SVS Pc12plus, SVS Pc12plus, Emotiva Xpa-5, Denon Avr3311ci, Sony Bdps1000es

+1. The 1007's amp section is surprisingly solid and is the closest thing to the 805 since its heyday. If you're using external power, the 707 would do the trick though.Equipment list:

Ah. I actually own an 805, just wondering if the newer offerings were necessarily any better in terms of either amp or preamp/processor. -

Probably not, the newer Onk's seem to be focusing on video and audio has taken a back seat. Although they did have the sense to put the Burr Brown DAC's back in the NR series, something they took out of my beloved 806. Unless you need the newer bells and whistles of the NR series, I would stick with your 805 and add an amp.

That's a load of crap. Ask to speak to the store manager, I got my Sony tv from them for cost because I brought in an ad from an online company and asked if they would match it. They tried to charge me shipping, saying that I was going to pay that too, but they also charged me tax, which I would not have paid at the site. Store manager cleared it all up and even gave me my power center for 50% off. That was about 4 years ago so they may have changed their policy, but I got it done then.

That unit has 1.1 HDMI repeaters so it can pass decoded LPCM but it cannot upconvert anything.
The first Denon to have 480p processing was mine...the AVR2807. The 3806, I believe was one of the earliest Denons to have HDMI ins/outs.

Both Best Buy and hhgregg told me the same thing yesterday. BTW the Onkyo 707 is $654.98 this morning on Amazon.

Hmmmm, they must have changed their policy, because I assure you it worked for me. I had to bury my head in the sand and act like a 4 yr old, but it worked, lol. As for the 707, I would seriously consider it. It doesn't have an overly powerful amp section, but it has pre-outs so an external amp will solve that problem. It does have all the bells and whistles you could want and the BUrr Brown DAC's.

Newegg has it for $599.00. hhgregg carries the 707. I have a $203.00 credit with hhgregg. I'll march in there at lunch time with the Newegg add and see if they will honor it.

Worth a shot, what's the worst that can happen? If not, then I strongly encourage you to just buy it from Newgg. They are a great company that many of your fellow Polkies (myself included) have bought from and will buy from again. They have free shipping and no tax, so other than having to wait a few days, you don't loose anything out of getting it from them. You can even buy the extended warranty as well.

Best Buy does not match online pricing, nor should they be expected to IMO. How anyone can reasonably expect a local B&M store that has a much higher cost of overhead to maintain to match the price of somewhere online who can ship it out of a warehouse at a much lower overhead is beyond me.
We have major entitlement issues in this country...
