Technology is cool but is it worth it?

$42 ---- cable
$50 ---- telephone
$65 ---- cell phone
$22 ---- internet
$10 ---- xm radio

$189 per month, $2268 per year?

I think I am going to turn mine off except for the XM radio. Watch antenna programs, use the internet and phone at work (I'm only paying for the telemarketers anyway) and get a cheap $10 per month cell phone for emergencies. I'll keep the XM radio though.

That is two grand extra next year for audio upgrades!!!

Upgrading the pots (Plain Old Telephone Service) Internet connection would "truly" be an "upgrade." I employ a DSL home networking system using an existing phone line, which is the type of integration that is the anticipated direction of our technology. Two computers share the DSL line, this line is also the land line telephone number in the house; both computers can access this line (at warp speed, mind you) while at the same time I'm using it to talk on the telephone. This is a good thing.

cable internet for me in my apartment in Baton Rouge was $40/month and it was f'ing fast! napster downloads (when napster was worth a ****, like a year ago) at 250-300k/second.

Cable is usually faster than DSL. :) No long term contracts or long waits... and the big thing for me was being able to tell Bell (Southwestern Bell in my case) to f*** off!

A cable modem here is $40-45 a month. With a small router or a computer with 2 NICs you can easily put as many computers on it that you want.

I get 200-300 KBPS, up *and* downstream. Sometimes more...

Madmax, if I were you I'd kill the phone service, the XM, and the dial up.

Get a cable modem for $40-45 a month through your cable provider. You can get all the digital music, streams, etc. via the internet (instead of XM) - and just use your cell phone for a home phone. It's worked great for me and most of my friends for a couple of years now.

I used to keep a spare dial up for travel, now I just have a wireless NIC in my laptop. I can do to any barnes and noble, starbucks, airport, etc. and use their internet access. :)

Since people are bringing up old threads, here is one I started. It is now 7 years later and I cut all the expenses I was talking about in the original post. I'm calculating now that I am $16,000 richer today than I would have been! It didn't hurt at all. I guess that is how I afforded the Avantgards and a rack of Manley gear...

Just have cable internet at home ($29.99 per month) and plain old landline service ($32 or so, varies).

I've cancelled my XM radio for 2 years now, but still getting service. Anyone successfully cancel without getting 3 months free...then another 6 months...then another year free?

I pay $68 for cable TV and internet. The TV portion of the bill is $17, that's cheap entertainment if you ask me. The internet is a necessity for work, and another form of entertainment as well, so well worth it to me. Without high speed internet, I would actually lose money.

As far as the phone, gotta have some way to communicate with people, although no cell phone.

We do not have cable nor are we going to get it when it becomes available in our area. Satellite is much cheaper. Also the only internet we can get where we live is satellite so that is pretty bad and expensive but beats dial up. I do not mind paying for tech as long as I can afford it that is what it boils down to. My father did not continue his xm because he said that was to expensive I on the other hand had Sirius and loved it of cores the lifetime subscription was nice as well. Our cell phones is the family plan and pretty good it comes to 120 for 6 of us on it. Unlimited talk after 9, unlimited text and all that good stuff. Verizon what we have.

Now in my own room I only have an antenna hooked up to my tv to get 1080I tv. It is not bad but would prefer satellite for the better sound.

So out of these - where are you at??
    $42 ---- cable
    $50 ---- telephone
    $65 ---- cell phone
    $22 ---- internet
    $10 ---- xm radio

$189 per month, $2268 per year?

    Here is mine...

$60 ---- cable (includes internet - yes I have a REALLY basic cable package)
$25 ---- telephone (Use cell for long distance - this is just a monthly home phone fee so telemarketers can find me...)
$75 ---- cell phone (I am pretty happy with this one - it is for my wife and I's phones - both with unlimited internet and GPS... (no texting though))
$00 ---- internet (See cable above)
    $00 ---- xm radio (Don't have it)

    Total cost:

    $160 per month.

Really not bad considering how much I spend on eating out, Gas (auto), electric (home), and other hobbies. (4 saltwater fish tanks, home theater, etc.)

Basically - if I need to cut back, there are other areas of my life that I would consider more expensive but less essential....
    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
    Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
    Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms)

I forgot to put my numbers down...

Cable - $144 (all HD, internet, DVR, movie channels, saves on blockbuster rentals)
    XM- No
Phone - no land line, cell at $40/month.

$184 a month isn't bad. As has been said, i could cut back on a lot of other things first.

$0 ---- xm radio (got rid of it a month after my first post)

$7.50 per month, $90 per year.

I actually did a lot of things back then. Quit smoking and drinking too. That alone has saved me $20K.

So over the past 7 years I really saved $36K or $5100 a year.

wow, that is a lot of money when you really think about it.
    Mine right now is
Cable 50.00 Includeds HD channels and box
    Internet 50.00
Cell phone 50 but soon to go to 90.00
    no XM
    no land line.
    Total spent per month 190.00
I really wish I could cut the cost of my internet but I only really have one choice and its Charter whom I hate very very deeply, same with cable as I live in an apartment and can only have Charter which is a pain in the butt.
If I could just do the cell phone I would save 1200.00 bucks a year which honestly doesn't seem like a lot but in the long run really is after a couple years.

Anyone wanting to save a bundle on landline service should look into getting an Ooma. I've had one for a few months now and it's been flawless. I talked my parents into getting one and they dropped their $45/month landline for it and are now saving $540/year.

If you get the older version of Ooma (the hub) you don't have to pay any yearly fees like you do with the Telo.

    http://www.ooma.com/

You can find some deals on it on ebay, costco, and even Walmart.

$55 per month for cable internet
    $14 per month for Netflix

Work pays for my cell phone, got rid of the landline after realizing they had accidently disconnected it for 3 mos and I didn't notice. Listen to internet radio, get local channels on the cable feed by default. Life is good.

    Interesting thread. For me:

Cable: never paid for it (had basic cable for free as part of a rental deal before, but not
worth whatever it is they charge.)
    XM: never tried
Landline: $31 (use Skype for long distance)
    Internet: $20
Cell phone:....kind of complicated. Up until 4 days ago, my wife and I were probably the last American family not to have a single cell phone between us. Then one of her good friends gave her an Iphone 3G for Xmas, adding it on her to main account as part of a "family plan". My wife will now pay between $10 - $20 per month to her friend, who said she can use 300 minutes per month in addition to free nights and weekends.

So the big question is whether we're going to cancel landline service. I think we'll probably give it 2 or 3 months and see how it goes...but I bet we'll probably end up canceling landline service eventually, which would take us down to about $40 per month for everything.

    Haven't had a landline since 2002

My cell phone account runs around $289 a month, I have 4 iphones

My Cable is around $131 a month down from $235 because I am using fios now instead of comcast. Same amount of options. Comcast just recently came around and said they will match fios's service for $99 a month but I like Fios internet better, it is super fast.

Oh yeah, I also pay for an EVDO modem for my laptop so that I can have internet access on the road, that's 66.13 a month

    That's around $5832 per year!

In another 7 years you can say "I spent $40,824 on services since I wrote this!"

On Air TV does NOT have the best programming. However there are a few interesting stations, nothing like cable though. I get by when nothing good is on air with cheap DVD's, BR, HD and other sources like laser disk and VCR. My biggest problem with "good programming" is the violence. After years of not seeing it I find it quite disturbing.

Yes, my TT could use some upgrading at this point. Such a meager system is so far below me.

I disagree. I had Cable/Satellite for years. Finally got fed up with their price increases. I sat back and figured out that more than 95% of our viewing was available from local broadcast. About 2 months ago, I dumped DirecTV and bought a couple of used TivoHD boxes. Now I pay Tivo about $20/month (for two units) instead of $80-$90/month to Directv. So far, the only thing I've missed is a few College FB games on ESPN. My wife and I still get to watch all our normal shows, PLUS, I get instant streaming from Netflix which has made things very interesting.
