That Kenwood was missing the telephone and Blender options. You have to wonder about them when they make kitchen appliances.

Back in the day I used to love Kenwood, they used to make some decent car stuff. In High school one of my friends had a set of Kenwood house speakers. Only house speakers I had ever heard that the bass would hurt my ears. On the other side of the fence time 1993 Receiver Kenwood speaks Cerwin Vega DX9s(used to DJ with them 104 db 1w@1m). The receiver would cut out any where above about 1/3 volume. sorry for the thread jack

    Ah I see...

Yeah, this discussion has been quite civil hasn't it :D. I can't recall ever having heard a Kenwood receiver at any time....they still make them I think don't they?

I have not seen the over-the-top support here for Yamaha. Having owned Yammi's for the better part of two decades, I will be the first to admit that there is better out there these days. Back in the day however, their build quality, product design, and performance were hard to beat for the price. Reliability in my case has been superb.

My first foray into separates (two Sunfire amps/Sunfire pre/pro) has opened my eyes to the fact that Yamaha is better at building motorcycles and watercraft than they are at audio gear these days. The "RABINOUS" ones are fans of gear that starts with that letter which shall remain un-named.

Eggplants are just the new flavor of the month. Very few actually like Eggplants, but those that do (Eggheads) react violently to what they perceive as Egging, or "Eggbashing".

A broken Eggplant is called a Humpty-Dumpty for those of you that didn't know...

Ah, lol....here's a variation of the topic....

Whats the difference of using an external DAC with a CD Player vs. using the internal DAC?

It depends on the CD player and the external DAC. An inexpensive CD player used with a good external DAC will compete with a much more expensive CD player. Plus the external DAC will have multiple inputs giving you more flexibility by adding other digital sources.

But what if your using a straight digital input?

I do not understand the question. Straight digital input to what? The DAC? That is what a DAC takes. It is a Digital to Analog Convertor, so it needs a digital input, such as the digital ouput of a CD player.

Okay. The CD digital out goes to the DAC, and the DAC analog output goes to the pre-amp or receiver, in this case the CD input, but any input should work.

This means you are not using the receiver's dac's.

If you got the cash to spend on a receiver the higher end Yammies are not bad at all and sound totally different than the "entry" model's ;) There is nothing wrong with the model i own :o It's built like a tank, has more feature's than i know what to do with (quite a bit for it's price range as well TBH), plenty of power (for an AVR), sleek look's and it's easy to use :)

In most cases an external DAC should be better sounding than the internal one because of being an individual circuit. It has it's own power supply ,so it has no other sources to draw power from it. It also will not have electrical noise in the signal from the motor spinning and speeding up or slowing down. An ideal one, I would believe, would have separate power supplies for the analog and digital sections.

    Couple of reasons for seperates:

    1. Generally better fidelity, as the manufacturer can focus on a single aspect. It's difficult to put all top-notch components into a workable single chasis (integrated), without it being the size of a mini-fridge.
    2. Flexibility. You like Carver amps, but prefer adcom preamps
    3. Upgradeability of just certain pieces; you like you're pre, but want to try a different amp. You want to mix tubes and ss; etc...
