what, where and how do I determine what kind of HDMI cables to get. Noticing several different kinds.
Also I see some AVR listed with HDMI 1.1 or higher. Whats the diff?
As always, thanks for the continuing education.
Now if someone could just bonk me on the head and convince me what AVR to purchase I can quit agonizing and start listening
Greg
Greg,
The debacle and torture that has been the introduction of the HDMI specification(s) has confused many beyond you, my friend, so don't worry -- in a nutshell, the "highest" rating of HDMI at the moment is 1.3 or 1.3a, which you'll see splashed all over marketing materials for cables, electronics, etc. This basically means full 1080p video and all the high resolution codecs (Dolby's TrueHD and DTS' HD-Master Audio) in bitstream form can pass over these so-called "high speed cables." Prior to HDMI 1.3, the other versions were more restricted in terms of what could pass over them; i.e. some just passed video, and you needed a separate audio cable to pass the audio streams. But with HDMI 1.3a, full 1080p video and any kind of audio can pass over this one cable. It's how I run my system, with all audio and video coming over one HDMI cable to my 1.3a-capable receiver.
As for the receiver, here are my suggestions for brands (not specific models, which your budget will advise):
Onkyo
Denon
Yamaha
Sony ES only
Integra (gets pricey) -
All Very interesting opinions and suggestions here. Doing further research...
1)has any of you HK usere had any issues as stated in some reviews, static, update issues etc?
2) any issues with pre-owned or refurbished equipment?
3) reading specs, how do you tell or how is it stated it has pre-outs?
4) for some reason I keep looking at onkyo. There is a newTXSR607--input on this? ebay for under 400 bucks
---looking forward to the replies
I don't own a H/K but haven't heard very good things about them and their build quality, personally...that's not a bash on the company, just what I have heard (well, regarding their receivers). Now, I did buy an upconverting DVD player from H/K that didn't work right out of the box -- didn't send my TV a signal over component at all; returned it to Frys and exchanged it for a Panasonic, but this was years ago when Blu-ray first arrived and I hadn't jumped onboard yet.
Now, what I can say is that I disagree with all the "Onkyo bashing" from most regarding the musical performance of their lower-tiered receivers; my current 605 sounds absolutely fine in two-channel stereo mode with CDs playing, or even in Pro Logic II Music mode which creates a psuedo surround effect for two channel audio. I'm not saying this will destroy a million-dollar two channel dedicated setup, but it really does just fine with music in my opinion. My Marantz CD changer is connected to it, using the Marantz's DACs (via analog), and I don't have any burning desire to go run out and purchase an esoteric high end two channel power amp and the like; the 605 amplifies my music cleanly and greatly enough. And yes, I have demoed extremely high end two channel rigs before. Of course, this is all just my opinion.
To answer some of your questions, you will know if a receiver has preamp outs by reading its "features" list; it will be on the website, or wherever the marketing/advertising materials are.
With regard to the Onkyo 607, yes, this is their new model that replaced the 605 and 606 models before it; pretty much, now their midpriced offering with the same 90 watts per channel of the 605/606 and onboard high resolution surround decoding (TrueHD/Master Audio). This was also the first-ever (not any longer) receiver to offer Dolby's Pro Logic IIz "height" algorithm, which adds height channels to signals -- the jury is still out on that one. -
Hello and please forgive me if some questions seem obvious,
when listening to Music in 2 channel, thats the right and left speakers only?
If you have a 5.1 or 7.1 can you run music thru all speakers or is that more for the home theater experence.
I understand that you need a 5.1 or 7.1 system for that surround sound, right? 5.1= 5 speaker+sub
As other have said you can not have to much power, but Im not sure I need pre outs. Most all listening is low to mid volume. Can I achieve clear clean sound with a full 5.1 for movies and music with out an external amp????????????????????????????????
PS> Mike, you are the first one to mention YAMAHA. How is there equipment?

Hello and please forgive me if some questions seem obvious,
No problem at all -- we all started somewhere!when listening to Music in 2 channel, thats the right and left speakers only?
Well, literally yes, 2-channel means left and right, but when you use a receiver's "STEREO" mode, it includes the subwoofer in your system if you have one.If you have a 5.1 or 7.1 can you run music thru all speakers or is that more for the home theater experence.
Yes, you can run music through all five, six or seven channels -- Onkyo receivers have a mode called ALL CHANNEL STEREO, which sends the signal to every speaker in your system, or you can use the DOLBY PRO LOGIC II MUSIC mode, which creates a "surround effect" from stereo music but keeps the stereo mix's "feel" up front.I understand that you need a 5.1 or 7.1 system for that surround sound, right? 5.1= 5 speaker+sub
Film soundtracks on DVDs and Blu-rays are encoded at usually 5.1 surround audio, unless they're old films and they have 1.0 or 2.0 mono tracks, or stereo surround mixes -- but for the most part, for surround sound, you should have at the least three speakers up front, two in the back and a subwoofer. SOME DVDs and Blu-rays are coming with 6.1 and 7.1 soundtracks, but they're still rare.As other have said you can not have to much power, but Im not sure I need pre outs. Most all listening is low to mid volume. Can I achieve clear clean sound with a full 5.1 for movies and music with out an external amp????????????????????????????????
Is your question mark button broken? From what you describe for your listening tastes, a good-powered receiver should be fine -- something like the Onkyo 607. I wouldn't go lower than that in their lineup.PS> Mike, you are the first one to mention YAMAHA. How is there equipment?

I had a Yamaha stereo receiver in my 2-channel system years ago, and connected to a graphic equalizer, it sounded pretty punchy. A friend of mine from years ago as well swore by Yamaha receivers and hated Onkyo, so it's difficult to really say; I don't know much about their current AVRs but I put it on that list so you had something to choose from. I would stay with Denon or Onkyo, personally -- and DON'T buy a Sony receiver that's not from their premium "ES" line; they're a waste of money. I don't think the ES models are in your budget, though, from what you said.
I was once stuck on the "all from one brand" theory, where all my gear had to come from one manufacturer; but you'll learn in this hobby (audio and home theater) that you buy the brands that do the best at what you're buying them for -- in other words, I bought an Onkyo receiver because of their reputation, price, experience I had with them...but I bought a Panasonic Blu-ray player because it was the one to have at that time. I bought a Sony SXRD HDTV because they were highly regarded...bought a Marantz CD changer because I had one before that and thought it was a very good unit...wanted to replace my Marantz CD recorded that died with a Marantz Professional model, but turned to the TASCAM brand for CD recorder because of issues I was experiencing with the new Marantz CD changer, and on and on...
So, my rack is filled with mixed brands; I suppose it really doesn't matter.
This is an interesting subject, though -- how does everyone else feel about mixing brands in your racks? -
Music on a CD is mostly in stereo which is 2 channel. In pure or direct mode that is what you hear. When you switch to the multichannel modes, the AVR artificially processes the sound to multichannels. Depending on your ear, you may or may not like this.
True with DIRECT or PURE that it sends the stereo signal as-is to the two main channels, but with STEREO, the subwoofer is added (if there is one). -

Yes -- in fact, I may pick up a Westinghouse LCD for the bedroom that's really really cheap at Target on Black Friday, while supplies last...they're like giving them away; but it would only be for the bedroom TV, because we need a new display in there. -
I agree with everyones pre-outs comments... Ive had a new Yamaha 565 for about a month now and am already pissed I cheaped out and didn't get something with the pres. Also, this yamaha did replace an Onkyo 505 which was nice but only had the hdmi pass-through. Because of that, no audio besides optical which means that there was no True-Hd to be had. Very happy with the Yamaha and for only 300 bucks i thought it was a solid upgrade regardless of the pre-outs.

Right; that's what I was trying to explain to the OP, regarding Onkyo's "500" series line, and that it may not have the HDMI passthrough for audio and video -- your 505 apparently only had the video passthrough, so it couldn't decode TrueHD and Master Audio over HDMI. -
^ Exactly, got that as my first receiver 2 years ago without knowing much about anything yet. Paid like 170 for it brand new. The Yamaha sounds a lot better, does the new audio formats, more power, and has a bunch more features. For only 300 from newegg when it hits a sale, there aren't many better options IMO if you don't plan to add an amp.

I just bought a Onkyo 507. I especially like the amazingly clean, clear sound quality through a pair of Dynaco A25 speakers, for what that's worth. And yes, it has four HDMI 1.3a inputs (and one output), but no pre out for the main speakers (although it has for the surrounds and the sub).

Nice to know, Neschore -- I guess Onkyo updated the 500 series line to include HDMI 1.3a onboard, which I suspected they did. -

The HK 354 has been mentioned a lot, what is compareable in the Denon and marantz line, and are these models comparable to the Onkyo Sr607 (except for pre outs) which there are super prices on now? ---and-- is heat really an issue on the Onkyo like many reviews suggest?
Thanks again,

It's only an issue if you make it one. They may run warm, but if they continue to work, then what's it hurting? Just make sure it's well ventilated and has space to breath, and then move on to worrying about more important things.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

You are welcome for the input.
As Concealer suggested, the heat seems to be an issue if there is a reason to be an issue; in other words, I have run Onkyo receivers since my entry into the hobby, and they have never shut down because I don't run them near maximum output and they've always been in "open" racking situations with much air. That said, the company's receivers have had countless, almost infinite complaints on forums regarding their units' heat problems. It seems to be a common "issue;" but give it the right amount of air to breathe and it should never shut down on you. -

To the HK 354, I'd say the Onkyo 706/7, the Denon 2309/889, the Marantz 6003/4.

Hello -
Regarding HK avr's, I recently upgrade and purchased a HK AVR 354 from the authorized dealer on Ebay. I got it shipped to my door for 354 dollars. I think it's a GREAT deal. Obviously, it depends on how much you bid...
I upgraded from an Onkyo 606. I felt that the Onkyo did not do music playback as well as I would like, and the HK excels in both. If you're looking strictly for Home Theatre use, the Onkyo will do very well. I have also listened to a lot of avr's, many a little out of your price range. Pioneer Elite, if I had the money, may have been my numero uno choice.
If the 350 is too much for something like the HK 354, they also have the HK 254 which you can always get for less than 200. It has 50 watts pre channel, and has pre-outs. I'm learnign that watts aren't everything, and I can tell you that the 75 watts per channel with the HK 354 I have is WAY more impressive than the 90 watts per channel of the Onkyo 606 I had.
If you have anything else specific, feel free to ask.
James
James,
Now that you have had the HK for a few weeks, whats your review.
I originally started this post, and was looking at the Onk 507, then almost purchased a 607, but still have purchased yet. more research, reading and confusion. But like you, that 350-400 is my budget and the HK354 seems to be the one most recommended to match budget and my polk RTi8. I still have a concern with re-ferbs, Am I over thinking this (obviously)Sharp Aqous 40" LCD

I would reccomend staying with the RTi line. Either the series you have with the 8s or the RTiA series would be a very good choice, as the line is timbre matched and will blend the best with your 8s. If you can locate a CSi3 or 5 and FXi3 or 5 and a PSW or DSW series sub or 2 would round it out nicely. That would be a great system. I have RTi12s for my fronts CSiA6 for my center and FXiA4 for the surrounds and 2 DSWPRO600s for subs. You should check out our website. There are some great buys. Good luck.
The Polk Ebay store has some RTiA series stuff available. O yea Receiver I think others have covered that pretty well. I am using Denon equipment but here at Polk we do use alot of the Denon & Onkyo stuff and are pleased with it's performance.

Hello again,
would the above mentioned set up work better with the HK354 or Onkyo SR-607 in your opinions?
It seems those are my 2 finalists in the AVR search, I realize the Onk does not have pre's and the above mentioned set up seem pretty clean and simple.Sharp Aqous 40" LCD

If you can get the HK 354 for the same price, it is in a higher tier than the Onkyo 607....MSRP is more! It really competes with the 707 or higher in the Onkyo line....so I'd go with the 354....nice features, good power, good sound....and a bit more weight than the 607....I'm sure there is a 5 pound difference....that usually means a heftier transformer and maybe higher capacity CAPS? And Pre-outs!!!
