Recently, i won a pair of polk monitor 10b speakers from E-bay. I wanted to get a pair monitors when I was in school 86. I paid 150 dollars plus shipping. The person selling them told me all the drivers were in working order, when the speakers came in the mail, the SL2000 tweeter was out as well as two of the 6.5 midbass driversebay listing
Does anyone know if the SL2000T tweeters sold new by polk are as good as the orig? And if i have to replace one, should I replace both? This deal forced me to sell a pair of my other speakers on ebay......... Also, someone wrote something about wiring one of the midbass drivers out of phase to make them image more like the sda speakers... Did anyone try this? Thanks oh btw the seller refunded all my money : )

eugene65, sorry i don't know anything about the drivers in your monitor 10's. but i'm sure someone at Polk support can help you out.
As for your ebay experience.. you are a very lucky guy.. sounds like your seller made good on a bad set of speakers. it's honest sellers like that, that make online auctions worthy.
good luck with your monitor 10's.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I think the repair costs will be about 150$ or i might just scrap the whole project and buy new polks.... i think the RTi 70s might be a good choice. Funny how these old speakers got my interest back into polk audio.

Eugene, sorry about your experience. If you decide not to fix, I would be interested in the crossovers from the 10b's. Please let me know. Thanks, Jeff

if you do repair the 10b's, what would they be worth on the open market? What does a pair like that go for? Just curious.
thanks, AlPolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I think this pair would be worth around 200 dollars with 1 new SL2000T tweeter and 2 new midbass drivers. I seen them sell for up to 400 dollars on e-bay, but that was a pair with a exotic wood finish, i think it was rosewood? The speakers sold for 900 dollars new. The standard 10bs retailed for 650 in the vinyl finish. Two midbass drivers and a tweeter. Hmmmmmmmmm ... looks like the same driver setup as todays modern slim towers..... minus the passive radiator, replaced by a tuned flow port : ) I really wish i could have taken them out of the box and got a listen ...... buying new tweeters bothers me, i read somewhere some vintage polk tweeters were made by peerless and now peerless has a like model priced @ 145 each..... The rep at polk told me the new polk replacement was a little better, therefor my thinking was differnt, so i might need to buy two, so they match, for imaging..... this is my set back ... ha ha If i get the two new midbass units i would use i new in each cabinet... to balance the sound, since they will sound differnt being brand new speakers they need a run in. All you wanted was a price and i typed all this... blah blah..... later all !

can you install SL3000 tweeters instead of the 2000's? isn't that what the SDA's use?PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I do not think they would match the crossovers, some did use the SL2000's

I think if you want to keep these for yourself, they are worth repairing. If your plan is to fix them and sell them at a profit... I doubt you can do that.
Just wanted to cloud your decision further... if you decide to replace both tweeters, I would be interested in the single working SL2000 if the price is right. I have two original SL2000s in my Monitor 7Cs, just bought two of the 'new' SL2000s off the forum, for a project.. and would like to have a spare original as backup. SOMEONE will buy it from you.
As to what someone else said... Peerless currently makes a tweeter that looks like the old "Polk" SL1000.. with visible leads, slanting down and away from the dome. .... edit, correction.. that tweeter appears to no longer be available. I don't know if Peerless is making a 'new' old-Polk tweeter. Email Parts Express and/or Madisound and ax'em.
If you aren't in a hurry, monitor this forum closely and you might be able to snag the drivers you need (old, used) for a decent price. You can at least make one complete, working speaker for now. -
I know last week someone on Ebay was selling the SL2000 tweeter and some of the drivers. but it doesn't help you.SDS-400, SDA-1B, SVS 20-39pc+, B&K Ref 50, Denon 2900

I would want to fix them for myself. The working Sl2000 is slightly wrinkled. Has anyone tried deadening the cabinets/ drivers with plastic clay? Or adding more internal braces? These tweaks really work out well with one of my other projects.
-
Thanks... nix my desire for the tweeter.. homey don't do dented or previously dented.
As for adding stuff... why? I'd think it would come down to you not trusting what Polk did in the design, which is neither here nor there, I suppose. However, the true wrinkle is that if you add clay (?) or bracing, you are reducing the internal volume of the enclosure, which (if you trust Polk), has been optimized for two 6502s and a 10" PR of whatever weight it is. Whether it is noticable or whether it is offensive if noticable, you WILL alter the sonic characteristics of the system and the interaction between the 6502s and the PR if you change the volume. -

PWM - I would be more interested in the Monitor 10 tweeters, could you email me pics of them? If in fact you do want to part them out. dorokusai@comcast.netCTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Ah...nevermind, it just dawned on me about the tweeter...you have SL1000's....not 2000's. Thank you anyway, good luck

pwmcon1,
Start your own thread if you are serious about selling your 10's.
e65,
Glad to read that you got your purchase price refunded. Deal must not have been too recent as link is now inactive. Honest seller there.... dumb to offer flawed speakers as working, but honest.
I'm guessing the cab's are good to go, if you're considering replacing the drivers.
Russman and I just did a deal on tweeters that wound up with him getting a new set of 2000T's. He finds the T's smoother sounding than the 2000's, which I wanted as spares. If he doesn't see this to chime in, PM or e-mail him.
As for other questions you asked...
- Unless you can find a 2000, yes, replace both tweets.
- ebay the leftover 2000... even dented as long as it works, you'll get some bucks for it.
- No, don't look at a tweet other than the 2000T. As you indicated there would be cross-over compatiblility issues.
- I would not wire a mid-woofer out of phase. That will not mimic SDA's; it'll only mess up the soundstage by cancelling the sound from the properly wired driver.... Then again you can try it both ways easily enough, but if you do you are obligated to report your results...
Good call on using one new mid-woofer in each... It may be worth talking to Ken Swaugger about the bad drivers...
