Are You Ready for 3-D TV ???

Well, now that we have all pretty much figured out which 50" and/or 60" (or bigger) plasma or LED flat HD screens fit into our systems . . . .
Manufacturer's say that HD TV's have gotten about as good as human vision can detect. There won't be a lot more R&D spent to go beyond 1080p as the improvement is lost on our ability to see it.
So . . . where are those R&D dollars going ??
According to the September 5th 2009 issue of The Economist . . . .
. . . 3-D.
3-D prototypes were already rolled out by JVC, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and others LAST January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The article claims these 3-D sets will be in stores one year from now for the holiday season at the end of 2010.
There isn't much 3D content available right now so various schemes to convert existing video 3D will prevail at the onset.
One approach (autostereoscopic) uses timy lenses on the front of the display to direct images for the left and right eyes in several different directions. If your head is in the right place and you keep it still, a 3-D image appears.
Maybe Matt Polk can get in touch with these developers and weigh in to make sure we get the best "Autostereoscopic SWEET SPOT" possible.

I'm very ready. Just a bit sad that the plasma I purchased a year ago probably won't work with whatever they decide to use. I love 3d when it's done right. I've even worked on a few 3d things (episode of chuck in 3d also a horror movie called the hole) the technology is truly amazing and it's getting easier to use all the time.________________________________

Ehhh, not a big fan of this idea, but I had heard something on this a few months ago. I am fine with my Sony SXRD, no plans for a plasma or LCD/LED anytime soon.

50"/52" 1080p HD seems to be the manufacturer's sweet spot has gotten incredibly affordable and may be the best way to go if you are "waiting" for 3-D.
Even though I'm guessing it will be promoted heavily soon, like any breakthrough technology, it is going to be years before the whole system (broadcast/retail/service) is behind it.
Plus, I'll bet they get some serious price premiums for early sets.VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S

I'm not a fan. I agree with the headache comments. Unless they can make something truly holographic (think Star Wars). That would really be something.
... Not to go off on a tangent here, but could you imagine the changes that holographic displays would make in everything else related to living rooms..... speakers, furniture, etc would all have to change. Instead of having one wall of a room deditated to A/V, you'd have your A/V in the middle of the room and surround it by viewing space (furniture)... Our views on speaker placement, surround sound, everything would have to be different.
... ok back to reality.~Matt

I never really thought about it like that, but you are absolutely right. Somewhere down the road it will probably get interactive like the "Holo-deck" on Star Trek.VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S

I watched " Bloody Valentine' in 3d on my 126" screen on Blu Ray. There is a scene where the Killer throws a pick axe towards the screen and it scared the hell out of me as in you really think its real. Awesome to say the least, but on the fence to say Im ready to buy into.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

One point I never see mentioned in all the 3D stories is how does the movie appear if you cannot wear the glasses, or as is my case, have a weak eye and a dominant eye. Will the movie just look like a regular movie, or am I going to have to give up movies in the future, and just listen to music?Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

In my original post, I mentioned what the industry is calling the "autostereoscopic" approach which eliminates the need for glassesVTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S
