    CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

    As it turns out the seller had sold them, but when the buyer found out how much the shipping would be, he backed out. They are mine after all. :D Doro and I are going on a road trip.

    BTW, I have a 1991 Audio Critic magazine which has an article on these. If you want a copy send me your address or provide a fax number. Damn, I'm happy for you! This should be quite a different experience than the SDA's. All the different areas should excel. Do you have some really big amps to try these out with? The article I have say they should be maybe 3 feet from the back wall which is probably why he is talking about the material fastened on the back. Do you have that large of a room or will you do the same thing as he did? Keep me on the list to hear them!

    Also just read the ad and noted:
    "Additionally, they are power hungry. The more you can provide them, the happier they will be. I would take the 35 watts specification with several grains of salt. Try a minimum of 75 watts. Finally, they like a 15-minute warm up."

    Jes, I think seller is about an order of magnitude off. Your ES may have just met its match.

    Also he notes the warm up period I noted.

    One thing is that the Platinum version is considerably more efficient than the original Amazings were. 91db / 8 ohm if I'm not mistaken. George has reported driving his with a 100wpc receiver with satisfactory results. Having said that, more power is a good thing. I'm finding that the mono's are making a substantial difference in mine.

    Yes, I do also note the warmup period, however, mine have been 'on' pretty much since I got them home....

    I think I read once that the original ribbon material degrades over time, but that once they were replaced with the new ribbon material that they would not need to be replaced again. Is this something I should worry about if i am looking to pick up a pair? I haven't seen a reasonably priced pair within driving distance of VA in the year that I have been looking. oh well.

    I don't know about that....my ribbons are in the neighborhood of 14 years old and are as new. Mr. Grands are 12 or 13 and are just fine as well. I think that properly cared for there are no issues.

    The ribbons are subject to delamination issues. My understanding is that swings in humidity are a major contributor to any problems arising. So climate control is important.

    That said I would consider where they have been and where you are, but with A/C so common, it's not the issue it could be.

    The Cantina band had their instruments hooked up to them. In a cut scene from the movie, Luke wanted to use the landspeeder sale money to buy them, but they needed the cash to hire Han Solo for the space ride.

    Damn that Obi Wan, Luke could have had a pair of CA's. Him and the princess could have been kickin back listening to some Ewok tunes! :D
