A friend of mine is looking for a high end AVR and is considering the Rotel RSX-1560. He will be using B&W 803D speakers.

Any input or experience with this AVR would be great.

I think he is going to low with the speakers he has. Tell him to look into at least Rotel Seperates. The New 15 series is very nice not to mention there new Digital amps.

Mantis, thanks but I am not seeing anything at Rotel that looks like the new 15 series, which ones ?

well the very AVR your friend is looking at is the 15 series, it means the new line of components from Rotel that start with a 15. for example the one he is looking at RXS-1560.

I think what mantis is saying is that the 803D needs external amplification. in that case he should be looking at something like RSP-1570 plus RMB-1575 for a multichannel amp or the RB-1582 for 2 channel amp.
    Current HT setup
    Mains: B&W 804s
    Center: Polk CSi5
    Surround: Polk FXi3
    Sub: Velodyne DLS-3750R
    Receiver: Pioneer SC-07
    Amplifier: Sunfire TGA5200
    TV: Sony KDS60A2020
    DBP: Sony DBP-S350
    CDP: Pioneer DV-48AV
    Interconnect cables: SignalCable analog II
speaker cables: SignalCable Ultra Speaker Cables Bi-wire

    Thanks,

803D's really need seperates to shine. I suggest looking at the used market for a 1092 or a pair of 1091's. I also suggest a parasound A21. List in order:

    Parasound A21's
    Rotel's
    1091's
    1092
    1077
    1085
    1086
    1080
    1095

Would be my list for "budget" seperates with those speakers. Emotiva also makes some decent amps but what can I say, I love D Class amps for their size, noise floor, sound, and heat!

Used market is the way to goo on amps and pres/pros. There is no point to powering 9K speakers with something that isn't going to make them sing. Also, room placement/treatment is going to be huge!!!!
    RTi12 x 2
    RTi6 x 4 Surrounds
    CSi5 x 1 Center
    Rotel RB-1091 x 2 for powering mains
Rotel RMB-1085 for power of surrounds and center
    Rotel RSP-1068
    Infinity ps-12 Sub
PS3/Xbox 360 as source and PC transport
