CP, the demo participants have agreed not to let the cat out of the bag, until everyone has had their turn.
I'll shoot you a pm with my thoughts on the player. -

I'm sorry CP, but last call was some time ago. This was never meant to be an open-ended demo, like the cable demos. The only reason we 'paid' for the demo, was to fund the purchase of the player, and a drawing was held-in which Ben won the player and will be receiving it last. He doesn't know how lucky he is, yet...;) -

This player made it to our weekend RAS (Rockford Audio Society) gathering and we put it up against a few benchmarks. Personally I don;t feel reviews from demos will really influence anyone. I will abide by the wishes of those involved to not say anything at this time.

P.s. When I say benchmark, I mean a unit I'm very familiar with"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? Well...Duell(lessisnevermore) came by my house today and dropped off the ERC-1!:D Duell's a real cool guy! We hung out for an hour or so, and did a bit of comparison against my Cambridge DVD89 universal. We would have did a bit more comparison, but I'd just gotten off of work, and we both had stuff to do. It was cool hanging out with him for a bit though!:)
Here are a few of my impressions of the unit, aside from the sound quality aspects...
First of all...this thing is built like a brick shithouse. A very solid unit...it weighs a lot more than you'd expect it to as well. The extruded aluminum baffle looks beautiful. The silver/gray accents on the corners are a nice touch too. All of the blue LED's look awesome as well. Between the ERC-1, and the 8 or so bright blue LED's on my APC H10 power conditioner, I had a nice little nite light going. Added some really cool ambience when listening to tunes with the lights off and the black lights on. It really sets a nice atmosphere.
The packaging for it is SUPERB! Double boxed, with some nice cushiony, but firm styrofoam cut to the exact shape of the CDP. The styrofoam also has a hard cardboard backing on the top and bottom to reduce flexing. I give Emotiva big props on their packaging job.
The user manual was also MUCH better than the average piece of gear. It was very straightforward, and explained all of the different features in good old, straight forward, easy to understand English. No terribly worded descriptions that take 2 minutes to decipher...lol Props to Emo on the manual...it's much better than all of the gear manuals I've gotten recently.
Another note...the slot loading mechanism.
I thought that I was going to hate this, but I'm actually starting to like it. It's nice for removing discs particularly. The CD slides out just enough so you can get a finger in the center hole, and a thumb on the outer edge.
It still remains to be seen whether I'll like the slot-load in the long run...but it's pretty cool for the time being.
One feature of the ERC-1 that I REALLY like is the A/B feature. It lets you loop a certain section of a track over and over again. This is great for me. A lot of the songs that I learn on guitar, I just learn by ear, listening to them over and over and over again.
When trying to focus on a certain part of the song, it's a pain in the **** to listen through it once, then have to stop and rewind it...listen again, stop, rewind etc. By the time you have it back to the beginning of the passage you've half forgotten what it was that you just figured out...lol
With the A/B feature, you just click the A/B button at the beginning of the passage, and click it again at the end of the passage. It will then infinitely loop that one passage until you tell it to stop.
Then I came to realize that my Cambridge DVD89 universal actually has the same feature, and I just never realized it...:o...lol
One last point...The remote for this thing is BADASS! All extruded aluminum...heavy as hell. If anyone ever breaks into my house I'm reaching for this remote and beating the crap out of them with it...lmao
The remote itself weighs over half a pound...9 ounces to be exact. All extruded aluminum...no cheap plastic here. I tend to play with the batter compartment lids on remotes a lot...the little plastic tabs always end up breaking off after a few years. I know plenty of people have the same problem...lol
Not with this one though. You actually need a small phillips head screw driver to get into the batter compartment.
I like how the buttons on the remote actually "click" when you push them too.
I've already said it...but I've gotta give Emotiva props on the build quality of this thing. Especially when you consider it's price point of $400, this thing is built damn well.dane_peterson wrote: »Does that mean I'm next in line?
I believe so! You're in for a treat!;) I'll let you know when I send it along. I might just decide to keep it though.;) It's looking pretty sexy in my rack...lolThis player made it to our weekend RAS (Rockford Audio Society) gathering and we put it up against a few benchmarks. Personally I don;t feel reviews from demos will really influence anyone. I will abide by the wishes of those involved to not say anything at this time.

I'd have to agree with Brock. If everyone else wants to abstain from posting reviews, I'll go along with it though. Personally, I talked to a few of the people who demo'ed it before I did over PM, just to hear their thoughts on it.
It hasn't changed my impressions of it at all. I've heard similar characteristics in some ways, but I've also gotten my own impressions of it as well.
I've only gotten about 4 hours of listening time in...so I've definitely gotta get some more time before I build any real solid impressions of it.
Thanks again, Dane, for taking the time to put all of this together.:D
Also, I haven't tested out Ben's cables yet. I figured I'd listen to the ERC-1 with my own cables( AQ Sidewinders) for the first week or so, to get a feel for the CDP. These Ben's cables are SKINNY! I've seen pictures of them before...I never realized how thin they are. I'm looking forward to seeing how they match up against my AQ's.

Sorry Jeff, but the demo order for this has already been established. It's headed out for the west coast once it's done with it's tour of the mid-west.
To answer your other questions, I'd guess that it's better than most DVD players as far as 2 channel CD playback goes. There are high end universal DVD players out there that would completely smoke it too though.
Would you really have much of a use for a CDP though, considering that you're deaf?
I suppose your wife would use it...but when she listens to music, does she listen to it real critically? Or is it more like just background music when she's doing stuff around the house? IIRC, you were telling me a while back that she listens to most of her music on an iPod...The nirvana inducer-

Hi everyone! I think it is really cool how you all have rallied to take advantage of the Emotiva offer to demo their ERC-1. Pretty cool company for sure and I like them.
I bought the ERC-1 and spent several weeks trying to determine how to do a proper DIY evaluation of a CD player. You guys are all really supportive of one another but that is not always the case on the AVS forums so I tried really hard to put something together that could be credible to anyone interested in this product.
The bulletin board code on Emotiva is ProBoards and has a slightly different syntax than vbulletin so here is a link for the evalution on the ERC from my experience.
ERC-1 Evaluation
Any constructive feedback that you may have is always appreciated!:) -

Hi, actually Emotiva had little to do with this demo.....
They did a discount, which was great, but we all chipped in and bought the player.(as well as the BW Audio cables) A drawing was held, and the winner gets to keep the player.
This is a different deal than the MIT cable demos, also going on at this site. Those are on loan from the company, regardless of one's opinion of cables, prices, etc...that's a pretty cool thing for them to do.
Dane did the work, Ben made the cables, and gave us a hell of a good deal as well. Thanks again to both of you guys.
I think the one opinion of this player, that we all share, is that we wish we had more time with it, or actually owned it.:D -

lol...Yes, it was the rain.;) It rained like 4 days out of last week, and made it impossible to get anything done.
I could have sent it out on Monday, but it would have meant me basically not eating this week...lol
You think I'm actually gonna spend money on my birthday?..lol ****...I could have gotten 6 people drunk with all the free drinks I was getting.:p
Part of the demo got ruined for me...I had an ear infection for about 4 days last week, and I was basically deaf in my left ear. I had to crank the balance knob almost all the way to the left in order for everything to sound balanced...lol
My hearings basically back to normal now though...so the balance knob is back to the center position. The nirvana inducer-

Yeh but what great conditions to sit in front of your gear listening to tunes.:)
Really want to see what others impressions were, especially those with higher end gear to compare it to/with.
edit just saw about your hearing problem. So I guess it wasn't "great" conditions after all -

My rig has gone through so many transformations in the last couple of weeks that I'm not going to be too critical. I don't even have a benchmark player in the meantime. Nonetheless, I plan to enjoy my short time with the player.

No response from Dane so far. Safe to say he received the unit, so entralled with its performance, has become an introvert and destitute. 5 days growth, pizza boxes and beer cans, calling out sick. Think the rig transformation is complete. j/k Dane:p:D

Yes, it's in my possession. I've had little time to demo it, but got through a couple of CDs. I'll probably ship it out to James in the next couple of days--to keep things moving.
By the way... my wife apologizes to everyone here. She managed to put a couple of scratches on the faceplate two days ago... I wasn't very happy. :X
