Some great 2.5 minute songs from those boys, but John Fogerty needs to get kicked down a flight of stairs.

When CCR was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame, they were supposed to perform on stage at the ceremony. The three other guys show up with their families for the induction ceremony, only to find out THEY would not be onstage playing their own songs. Fogerty refused to perform with his old band. Fogerty got his way, and other people played onstage with him. Lowlife.

I agree. He needs to forgive and forget. Also, I am disappointed in the way he is injecting his political views into his concerts. Its a free country, but when I listen to Green River live I don't need or care to hear how he feels about W. IMHO.

Now if you really want to do yourself a favour and get blown away by another cooking band at the height of their powers go listen to Exile On Main Street by The Rolling Stones. Recorded in 1972 in the basement of Keith Richard's tax haven mansion on the French Riviera.

Cool. Thanks for the tip. I just checked and indeed my local library holds this title so I'm going to go check it out later this afternoon. (BTW, Rolling Stones seem to fit well into what I was talking about above -- first song I ever heard by them was "Start Me Up" (not a bad song but I doubt it can compare to what they were producing in the late 1960s and 1970s). I look forward to checking out Exile and some of Graham Parsons's stuff.

For those of us in GGs age-grade cohort the 80s were kind of like the DARK AGES in Music...a long drawn out cacophony of the bad and the worse. A very forgettable decade except for some 'minor' bumps.

People seem to not 'remember' just how influential the 60s and 70s were for "Music"! And just how significant the African-American roots of what became the 60s and 70s were! For me, as a kid growing up....it took a couple of decades to come to terms with how important Motown was, for example. I had trouble identifying with the music. Now "I" understand it much better! Maturity in music appreciation is certainly a part of a true music education and a musical 'life', well lived.

Going back in the very convoluted way I have to start looking at some of the stuff in the 60s and 70s decades later, I can very much see how disappointed you guys must have been with the 1980s.

Well, I think some acts classified as "college rock" (the precursor to the label "progressive" or "alternative") such as R.E.M. and a few bands from the U.K.(i.e. The Smiths) might stand the test of time, but the vast majority from the 1980s will be fogotten with the passage of decades. Since listening to music is a subjective process, I think that for people like me who came of age in that period we may always have at least a tenuous connection with it but will be based more on nostalgia than on solid songwriting and muscianship.

I came across CCR's Greatest Hits CD at the library and decided to check it out. I have to say that its really good. Is it me or are these guys underrated / underappreciated?

Ok, my .02 worth. They are not underrated. CCR is in the R&R Hall. In their prime, they were a staple on the radio. Many confused them with the Frisco sound because that's where they were based. Reason they seem underrated is because the band & John argued legal issues about who had rights to the tour with the band name, John or Tom (his brother). I believe today we would classify them as Americana (IMO).

Check out the SACD of "Willy & the Poorboys". Just some worthless insight. By the way, "put me in coach, I'm ready to play" Enjoy your discovery. :D

    Hey Norm,

Its Gram Parsons not Graham FWIW....

BTW its best to give Exile On Main Street a few complete spins before making any snap judgments. Its a highly textured piece of work and not as instantly catchy or accessible as CCR.

    Looking forward to your impressions.

    Cheers,

    Mark
