what could top an RX-797 for nearfield two-channel? (for under $400)

After getting my monitor 70's squared away in my main room with an RX-797, I decided on a lark to put my older Boston Acoustics VR-M60's on my desk powered by the older HT receiver the 797 replaced, expecting to have to correct their brightness with the tone controls.
Turns out, I didn't. What's more, I like em, I like em a lot.
The RX-V620 pushing them isn't really suited to the task, though - the dsp chips are gone and generate hideous noise when engaged, and while it is transistor power it still can't hold a candle to the 797.
So, my question is: Before I run out and buy a second rx-797, what else is worth looking at for a two-channel option (don't need a tuner, integrateds are fine) under $400? Given how much these usually weigh, buying and trying at home is somewhat cost prohibitive in the $400 range.
I'd prefer it have a loudness control for late night listening and a decent headphone out.

2nd the vote for the Cambridge and also you may consider the harman kardon 3490.
The build quality of the Cambridge is phenominal. Extremely impressive. -
NAD especially the older used stuff.
