What's up everyone?
Well last night was the first night of using the internal ICE amps. I sold my Rotel RMB1095 and I was nervous as hell trying to run my 4 ohm load 86db Dynaudio Speakers off a receiver. This receiver is rated from 6 to 16 ohm speakers only so I was not ready to go against the grain.
I can go into the spec's but any of you can go read all about it, I'll answer any question anyone may have. The purpose of this review is to give some insights of actual use and demo. I have had over 2 weeks with it now, mostly as a preamp and last night and today as a full blown receiver. I maybe writing this alittle soon as I don't have my new speaker package which is 8 ohm load and 93 db which is a fantastic match for this receiver in up to a large room. So bare with me and I'll give you all of my impressions.
So when I first brought it home, I unpacked it and started to unwire my entire system. The system was wired in Component switching in the preamp and all Digital outs plus analog. I had a Rotel Rsp1068 running as my pre for the last almost 4 years. Probably the longest I have ever owned a piece of gear except my Pioneer Elite dv47a. Which I just sold only because I wanted to go full digital this time. I will explain.
The system now consists of
Pioneer Elite SC-07 used as a receiver
Pioneer Elite Dv58av SACD, DVD AUDIO , CD and DVD.
Ps3 for Blu ray and rarely a game system, also a Media server
Xbox360 for games mainly but I spin HD DVD , and watch Netflix movies
Xbox 360 HD DVD drive
WII for the kids
Comcast HD HDMI DVR
Ipod
Panamax M5500ex with a Kimber kable PK10 powercord.
Dynaudio speaker package 4 ohm load and 86db.
Sony 46 rptv HD 1080i
The system is now wired as the following
Comcast Binary HDMI to SC-07
WII composite and analog audio to Sc-07
DVD Binary HDMI to SC-07, Audioquest NRG2 to power center.
Ps3 Binary to Sc-07
Xbox360/HD DVD Drive Binary HDMI to SC-07
SC-07 to Tv Binary HDMI
Ipod Apple USB to Ipod front input
Audioquest speaker wire for everything but I switch out the front wires a lot. I have Analysis Plus Theater 2's, Kimber 4 tc, Audioquest 14-2 , Liberity 14-2 , and a Pair of Silver Sonic's which I really like.
So after I removed the Rotel preamp and Installed the receiver as a pre, I calibrated with MCACC which I did 3 times to make sure it was working correctly. The measurements where dead on. I measured out eveything with a tape and they came in within a inch. nice and acurate. I found I liked the way the system sound with MCACC then without better. I few systems I have Installed I found that MCACC sounded worse. Not the case in my house.
As a music lover , I listened to many SACD's , CD's and DVD AUDIO disc's with the DV58av. This is all done over HDMI so I have no coloration with cables. As most of you know , single ended cables change the sound from one cable to the next. In my opinion this is very true. No arguments about cables making a difference or not as this is my opinion. So I decided to go all HDMI as under 4 meters I can't tell the difference in good quality HDMI cables. I have found no proof they make a difference only difference is if the cable is constructed correctly or not. Binary makes nice cables and we use them at work so I purchased a boat load of them to wire up my system. No review on them except they work exaclty the same as my Audioquest cables with no differences I can tell audio or video so we will skip the wire debate here. Sound quality from my new system is very close to my old system. The Rotel preamp had a uncanny musical ability that I loved and still do. But the SC-07 is not letting me down as I did honestly expect to lose a bit here. Not the case, it sounds awesome. I listened my **** off to find missing sounds or coloration that I was expecting. I listened for over a week to tracks I know very very well and have used for demo's for years. Nothing missing and if anything it might be slightly not as warm. The Rotel could make you get comfortable in your chair and forget you where demoing. Kinda messed up the demo as you got into the music more. Not saying the SC-07 didn't do this to me a few times as it did, but I tried to stay focused so I could find some flaws. Up until last night, I can't sit here and tell you it's not as good as the Rotel in every way for sound quality. In my opinion I didn't downgrade but side graded if that makes sense. I don't think I lost anything but also didn't gain anything. It's at best slighty different. So I'm cool with that. I can still sit and listen without feeling like I made a mistake.
DD True HD and DTS HD is unbelievable. Man it's so damn clear and true. This is where I have gained in sound quality. As good as the Rotel was, It simply can't decode the audio formats, I could have got a Blu ray player with internal decoding, which I would have and this review would not exist, but I could simply not find the right Blu ray player stand alone that met all my needs. So I had to get a preamp or a receivers as one. I watched so many clips with my jaw on the Floor. I'm so happy to be current and have the latest sound formats. It's a simple pleasure to listen. And this is being decoded by the Ps3 not the SC-07. It comes over PCM. But I am however taking advantage of the badass Wolson DAC's. Sweet sounding and very dynamic.
Now removing my Rotel rmb1095 was scary. I didn't want to scratch up my cabinet as this beast weighs in at 75lbs. lucky for me Rotel was kind enough to install rear wheels which make a huge difference when moving this bad boy. Then I rewired the speakers and connected directly to the SC-07 holding my breath the entire time thinking( this is a mistake ). Every fiber of my body was screaming, go by a Rotel Digital amp if you want to hear ICE power, eff the internal amps , they will fail you and you will want it out tonight.... It's how I felt people , I thought I was going to connect up my Dynaudio speakers, listen for 3 seconds, hate it and want it out. Not the case again.
Well I was expecting nothing of the SC-07 to power my speakers so like a chicken I manually setup the speakers, removed MCACC . I calibrated everything in small and at 80hz. I'm sure my 82's are like "dude are you kidding me" yeah I know 82, I'm not using you the way you should be , I took away your fire and now blowing smoke at you...damn me.. So after calibration I reached for a cd as usual. I don't understand why but I do. i put in Lorenna Mckinnett and crossed my fingers almost to the point of wanting to just shut if off until I got my new speaker package. By the way upgrading sucks sometimes when you don't have the money to just buy everything at one. So I listened and then some more with one eye covered by my hands peaking out through my fingers and something is curious. My system sounds the same. Same sonic signature, exactly the same. So I turned it up notch by notch waiting for the protection light to come on and it got louder. I still had dynamics, not exaclty the earth moving amount I'm used to but enough to please me to the point I started to feel comfortable and wanted a glass of wine. I listened for about 45 minutes and figured ok, I can listen to music, no hate on it and actually enjoy a nice track.
On to movies. Ok I have some reference DVD's I love to test a system with Gladiator is one of my all time favorites. If you have not seen this movie, stop reading right now, go buy it and watch it. I turned the volume up to -10 figuring it would clip and I would just watch movies in 2 channel for now. Not the case again, this SC-07 has some good power. This is my first by the way experience with the SC-07 and 4 ohm load speakers, I have in the past ran 8 ohm load speakers only off it with stellar results. I ran it a full scene and actually 3/4's of the way I noticed myself watching the movie and not demoing anymore. This is a very good sign of a fantastic piece of gear. It's damn good I'll tell yeah. The only thing I noticed is the receiver is missing the very last amount of detail and dynamic range. My Rotel RMB1095 really pulled out the very fine details in the soundtrack. You could hear everything. i didn't feel I was missing anything but the chain sound when Maximus was fighting the unbeaten warrior, I didn't feel the chain was a loud in the mix, but what was strange is the wind noise and crowd noise seemed louder or more clear. Weird. I'll take it up as a very detailed preamp section and maybe better then my Rotel. It transferred audio to the Rotel digital so I can't blame that on a analog connection sounding different.
Ipod is very cool, on screen is fine, nothing special but I don't now like the front jack, I was cool with this in every single job I have Installed it on but in my house I now think it sucks. I wish Pioneer would have also included a rear jack so I could Install a dock and leave it in the system. I now have to remove the damn cable every-time I use the Ipod. Picky maybe but this is a design flaw for me. Sound quality is however fantastic and much better then i expected. Again I have only used 8 ohm load speakers and had no expectations for my speaker package to even work right. It does and it's cool. Also you access Ipod now from the Home Media gallery. I just setup the network and streamed Internet radio. Sound quality is poor and sounds like **** but it's cool it can do it. If I wanted to I could stream music over the network but I don't know how much I'm gonna use this feature. I played with it twice now and don't have much desire to further experience it.

I have AM and FM radio again, my wife is going to love this as she listens to the radio. She currently gets AM and FM around my house with my house system but now she can also put it on the theater system if she wants. Nothing cool to report other then I can do it. Nice. Owning a preamp for so long you don't miss certain things until you get them back. I got a radio and I love itDan

XM and Sirus are built in but I have no plans on using them. When I didn't have them I wanted them , then I got XM in my truck as it came with it and It's nothing special. I rather listen to my Ipod connected to the truck stereo then XM. So nothing more to report.
I have a house system as I have speakers all over the house. It's a big zone 2 system or I could make it a zone 2 and 3 system if I choose. This system lives in my basement and has Cd, Radio and Streaming Itunes VIA a Apple Airport Express. I control it from one of my Universal remote VIA RF and from my Iphone. So I send zone 2 out of the SC-07 downstairs to share the Radio, Ipod , maybe I will connect back up cable analog for that but right now I don't have it connected. I will once I feel like adding it in. When summer hits, I like to sit out on the Deck and listen to some tunes. Or when I'm in the garage cleaning my truck or the garage itself, it's nice to have music from the house system. And control it with my Iphone . Cool stuff.
The zone 2 and zne 3 works the same as usual. Discrete on and off, and you don't have to have the main zone on to use zone 2 or 3 but you need analog connections from external sources to pump music out. It's only analog unless you use the Ipod or internal sources including Xm, Sirius , AM/FM , Internet radio or anything from the Home media gallery. So to wrap it up I'm very pleased with my purchase. I can't wait to get my new speaker package. I want to add Dynamics not take some away. And thats the only thing negitive about my current setup. The receive is not designed to run 4 ohm load speakers. It can hoever player them well and if you never heard a good dynamic amp, you will not miss anything. However if you had a badass amp like I did and needed it, you will miss it. I'm noticing little things like micro dynamic. I have to turn the receiver up pretty loud to get any kind of volume out of it, not the case with the RMB1095 but I expected that and actually I expected alot worse. I will not leave my system the way it is. If for some reason I keep my Dynaudio speakers , I will pick up a Rotel ICE amp to power them. If I get eh Def tech Mythos package, then I already know the internal amps are more then plenty for them. If you own RTi or any 8 ohm load speakers, you will never feel the need for more power unless your power happy. I will say you will not need external amps. LSi owners look into external power amps. As my Dyn's the Lsi's are also power hungry and require more then the Sc-07 can dish out. It doesn't suck but I would rather have my Rotel amp instead of the internal amps.
sorry I had to post it over 3 posts, i had to many words.LOL

Dan,
If u r familiar with DLNA, cud u pls play around with Home Media Gallery (HMG) and let me know
o How stable is DLNA/HMG
o How is the song info displayed? (on the Device Display or TV Display)
o How ease is it to browse the Song list (Album/Artist/Folder etc.,..)
My gripe about SC07:
o Doesn't have Gigabit N/W connector (Come on Pioneer it is 2009)
o Doesn't support Video, specially HDVideo thru HMG (SC09 does for additional $1100) - shudn't cost much to support this as part of. May be its their Marketing Strategy

HMG is very stable as you can stream just about any supporting format and it will not drop. With the internet radio once the stream begins again you can listen to just about any genre of music. You can also go on the Pio website, make folders by fav genre or the like and pick any station you want, put it in your folders, and the pio 05/07 will pick those folders up off the internet via your AVRs ID. Title/track info is available onscreen on the display and the AVR. Browsing for music is very simple as you just use the directional keys on the remote to browse, enter, scroll, play. They have it setup to browse by genre to name a few talk radio, alternative, classics, gospel, country, rock, hip hop, etc with each having tons of stations to choose from. You can set it up to stream from you PC by authorizing it in Windows Media. These receivers(05,07,09) are very nice and should give you everything you want and more Very simple. Podcasts and Neural internet radio are also available and sound very good for what it is.
As for video it will not stream video however it is possible they may add this via firmware.
Mantis excellent review and congrats on the beast. I too would like for it to have the Ipod input in the rear so you could leave a cradle in place. I think the prior models had this but for some reason Pio changed this.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Pat.
Pat,
You should try to remove the amps for the front 3 and really pay attention to the clarity. With your speaker package, you could sell your amp and upgrade something else or buy more software. Rtia series speakers work very well with the Sc-05.
Your very welcome ,

My mains are set to small crossed over at 80hz. I feel no reason to take any more dynamic range away from the receiver. Once I get my new speakers, I will be running them in Large as they play all the way down to 14hz.

I am waiting to sell my Dynaudio speakers so I can use the money to pay for most of the upgrade. I'm sweating as I want them right now.

I think the prior models had this but for some reason Pio changed this.
I did notice all of this when I was playing around with it. The podcast option is neat. I wonder if you can reselect which podcasts you want. I listen to a few of them every week and would love to get it there as well. That would be cool and I could pump it around the house, listen in the shower without having to bring my Iphone in there to select it.
However I have not spent any more time with it. But I might dig deeper into it when I have some time to kill. I think it's cool it does it. video does not bother me as I stream movies with the Xbox360 with netflix.

Nice write up Dan. Sounds like you're very happy with the Pio. The SC-05/SC-07 is definitely in the running for when I upgrade my Onkyo 606. I keep hearing from a bunch of people with the Elite units and they all seem to be ecstatic with them.

Onkyo receiver as well as there Elite brand Integra perform very well. They get a lot of respect in the custom world.
Sound quality is personal and I don't care for Onkyo/Integra. The kind of speakers I like sound good with them.
The new ICE Elite receivers are fantastic. It might be a very nice upgrade for you and with the price drop, they are selling like hot cakes.

How do you think the 07 compares to the Onkyo 805/806?
After the review I'm looking at the Elite 07 myself. -

The Onkyo 806 is a very nice receiver with a lot of abilities and very custom friendly. The only thing I don't like about them is there sound quality. With the right speakers they sound pretty good.
The Sc-07 I feel is a better for me receiver as I like the way it sounds and I like what it can do. It does have a few short comings but I can live with them, nothing is perfect.
If I where to rate the 2 receivers in a Home Theater magazine stye....
Pioneer Elite SC-07 would get a overall 96 as losing 3 points for the following.
I don't personally like the front Ipod jack.
No Video support for Internet connection.
No 4 ohm load support even with ICE amps but will run them with less Dynamic range.
Crappy Remote.
No turn on volume.
I'd like to see 6 HDMI inputs.
Onkyo 806 I'd give a strong 95
I don't like it's overall brightness.
Lacks mid range detail
Crappy remote
No direct Ipod connection
Only 1 HDMI out
Only 2 Component inputs
It really depends on your needs and if you like the way it sounds. If it's good then I would get a Onkyo 806.

Dan,
Last night i hooked up my A9's to the receiver, I was very amazed at how good they sounded w/o the external amp. I had to give this a try after reading your reveiw. I am still thinking about bi-amping the A9's, I know i said i don't see my self doing it in another post, but i really want to experiment with it, I was thinking about asking Ben to build me some IC's for this project.

Mantis,
HELP..
I have been playing with my HT system lately and have purchased an XPA-3 Emotiva amp, also a used Parasound HCA1000A, and a used Sunfire Cinema Grand 200 X 5 (don't have the Sunfire yet). I am still undecided as to which amp I will use but I was about to try one of the Sunfire TGP 5"s processors since you can get them for $1,400.00 now on closeout. After reading your review I am wondering what to do?? I can still return the Emo, just had it a bit over a week , and I can resale the other stuff if needed. Would I be better off with the separate amps and a good processor, use a receiver as a processor (a tech at Parasound indicated this was not a good option), or use a receiver like the Elite 07 or 09 for everything?? This will be for my main HT which I also use to listen to 2 channel audio also. Everything I have been reading on this forum lately has lead in the direction of external amps are a must....then I read your review. I am confused and welcome any help I can get....

I have the XPA-3, and the Pioneer 07 as the 07 handles my A9's just fine, i still prefer the external AMP, But i will say my surrounds have really come to life with the 07. the best receiver i have ever owned. My yamaha RX-V863 is only 4 months old not that it's a bad receiver but the 07 is night and day over it, and the 07 only cost me $200 more then the Yammy. i agree with mantis about the ipod dock, the one thing i really liked about the Yammy i have the ipod dock for it, and you plug it into the back of the receiver.

Return what you can, buy the 07 try it on your setup without the amps, then with the amps. I use my 07 as a pre with Sunfire /D-Sonic Amp. I like having the headroom.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the sound quality of my Onkyo, though I'll admit I don't have a real lot of experience with other brands to compare it to. The Onkyo came out on top IMO between the Yamaha, Denon, Sony and Onkyo's that I demo'ed though. Unfortunately, there aren't any Pioneer dealers near me, the closest is about 60 miles away. I'm wishing I would have taken a trip and listened to one though in hindsight.
Either way, I won't be upgrading the 606 for a couple years at the soonest. I've got other aspects of my system that need attention first(i.e. 2 ch. rig). So, I've still got plenty of time to decide. I'm hoping I can at least get my ears on one of the Elite's sometime soon, to see what all the hype's about.
I'm still undecided whether I want to get another AVR, or just make the jump to a pre-pro/power amp. Like I said though...plenty of deciding time yet in those regards.
Does anyone know if Pioneer has any plans of releasing a pre-pro version of the Elite AVR's? From all of the positive reviews I've read about their AVR's, an Elite pre-pro would probably be a very good selling item. The nirvana inducer-
