Hello again,

Just wondering where to get one of these Avia set up disks that everyone talks about on here. Also Which spl meter to use to help set up the HT.

Thanks,
Brett

I bought mine from Amazon.com. There are also Sound & Vision, and Video Essentials. The newer ones allow you to calibrate the rear surrounds in a 7.1 set-up.

The new Digital Video Essentials looks like a killer deal and I recommend it. Although I do have Avia and I like it. Avia has an error in one section of the disc, though. The six channel pan in Chapter 7 has a problem with the LFE channel encoding.

Unless you have a huge amount of spare cash lying around, get the Radio Shack analog sound pressure meter. I heard it's on sale right now for $25. It's a screamin deal for that price and it's perfect for basic system calibration using test tones.

Thanks Doc...Sounds like you have the right perscription. Can you get the video essentials from amazon as well? I am probably going to hit radio shack on the way home...lol.
    Thanks again,
    Brett

Oh and any suggestions you might have on my previous post would be much appreciated!

Doc, you think that it would be better to pre-order the new Digital Video Essentials, or go ahead and buy the Avia disk? The new DVE is cheaper than the Avia....found the DVE for $25 and the Avia for $36. I am 5.1 but 6.1 soon, make a difference?

I am no hurry for the disc, but will be picking up an SPL meter tomorrow from Radio Shack
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I'd go for DVE if you don't have anything right now. The price is right and the features are great and it can do 7.1 (I think).

Thanks Dr. :) , one more question? Does the DVE/VE have as many options for audio testing as the Avia? Or is it more, as in the title, for video calibrations?

I mean I have looked at the specs for both, but the DVE looks less for audio.....

I currently use the service menu, found unlocking code on the web, for my TV. This is for the convergence and all the calibration of the video from RCA. How do these discs help with that?

Avia discs show up on Ebay fairly frequently at good prices.

For about $20 shipped from Amazon, I'm getting DVE. It has all new DD and DTS sound calibration sections.

Avia is loaded with tons of audio tests, but many of them are superfluous if your system is properly wired and connected. It's fun to try them all, but largely not useful if you already know what you are doing. I just use it for channel balancing and calibration to Dolby reference level.

The most beautiful sound I ever heard:

    Avia, avia, avia, avia.

All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word:

Avia, avia, avia, avia, avia, avia.

Avia, I've just heard a disc named Avia,

and suddenly the tones send shivers in my bones, for me.

Avia! I've just played a disk called AVIA!

And suddenly I've found how wonderful a sound can be.

Avia, say it loud and there's music playing.

Say it soft and it's almost like praying,

Avia, I never stop setting up with: "AVIA!"

.. I'm not making jolks.. I really love my Polks...
I play them oh so loud, and entertain a crowd
But on the brink I teeter, so I use my RS meter
Set the center right at zero, gotta grab another beero
Now the mains have joined the club, time to calibrate the sub
Put the sub on minus three.. damn the beer, I've gotta pee
Now you change it at the amp, damn this sub is like a vamp
Sucks me in and spits me out, thumps my chest without a doubt
Brought the rears right into line, now the suite is sounding fine
Reference level's in my reach, I slam a disc into the breech
Not the violent or the gory, I'm a dad who plays Toy Story
Monsters, Inc. and Bang Band Chitty, but I won't play Hello Kitty
Now the kids are all in bed, feed the need inside my head
Save the Private, drop the Ring, hear the chicks at Moulin sing
Reference level, I can do it, but the kids would not sleep through it
So I must be fine, you see, with peaks of 75 dB.

Thank you.. thank you very much... thank you...

    I've left the building....

Life is too short... as long as *I* think I'm funny, I'm going to go with that.

I thought you'd appreciate the rhyme, Doc... perhaps a chant for newbies, much like the 'mission rhyme' from Dirty Dozen.
