I recently purchased a 2250 Marantz completely serviced to replace a Sony 2 channel receiver I bought 2 months ago and decided it was a waste of money. Anyway, I purchased the Monitor 40's from Newegg and decided to throw them on the Marantz just to see what they sounded like. All I can say is WOW!! What an upgrade.. The question is If i decided to go with a floorstanding model what model should I be looking to buy? would a set of Monitor 70's be better than the 40's? I'd like to stay with Polk because I love their sound and it's for my bedroom not my main system. Please any suggestions would be very helpful. I listen to heavy metal and rock.

Thanks
Newbie

It all depends on what you want out of the speakers. In an average sized bedroom, the 40s will be plenty. The only thing you will really gain by going with the floor standers is more base extension. You will get JUST a little more with the 50s. Much more with the 60s and a huge differance with the 70s. Personally, the clarity you get with the 40s or the 50s will be best. The 50s are just the floor standing version of the 40.

While I agree that the 40's will probably be more than enough for an average sized bedroom, I have 2 Monitor 70's, 2 TSi 500's, a CS2, and PSW125 in my living room and I bet it isn't much bigger than most of your bedrooms. Gotta love base housing, lol. I used to have the Monitor 40's for surrounds, and I must say I was impressed with them, I even ran them up front a few times, just to see what they could do. They really are a great little speaker. If you are just looking for 2 ch. music listening, you would be better off getting some Vintage Polks, like some Monitor 5's, 7's or 10's, something like that. I just got a set of Monitor 10A's a few weeks ago and they are a sweet sounding speaker. They can be had for some pretty good prices locally in the used market and are a much cheaper step into the 2 ch world than most Polk floorstanders. I think that most would agree for music, you can't beat the LSi series, but they are pretty pricey. Good luck, and welcome to Club Polk.
