New member to the forum, but a long time Polk fan. There certainly is a ton of information on this forum. I have a few questions, mostly about older Polks, but some new. I just felt this section was the best to post in.
I currently have a pair of 10b's in my living room, and Monitor 5's in my office. They both have the Polk Audio labeled tweeters, with the clear dome. The SL-2000 I think?
I refer to the 10's as 10b, but I really don't know for sure. The tag on back just says Monitor Series 10 187727. The SN may tell something.
So my questions...
1. I have the 10's on stands, but not stock Polk stands. What is the recommended placement for best performance on these speakers? Height, angle, etc.
2. I use my 5's in my office/music/recording room. I like them but sometimes feel the high end is somewhat compressed and harsh, though entirely listenable. Do the peerless style tweeters really help that much with this?
3. Is there any current Polks that match or exceed the sonics of the 10's for a reasonable price? I really haven't kept up much with Polk in the last 10 years or so. Too much work and family. Are there current speakers worth looking into? I always wanted some RTA 11's, but the 10's are certainly usable.
Thanks to all

WELCOME TO CLUB POLK!
I can't answer all your questions, but I'll try to answer some. Others can take care of the rest.
First, the SL2000 is one of the least desirable of the Vintage Polk tweeters precisely because it can sound harsh with certain set ups. You can get silk dome replacements for this from POLK....the replacement is the RDO-194 and will help with that problem a lot!
Second, the most musical of the current polk line are the LSi speakers.....the bookshelves are nice, or the LSI-15s if you want a tower and more bass. But they are 4 ohm speakers and you will need a power amp to drive them well.
Third, you might want to try picking up some old SDA Polks if you like the 10s. They are even BETTER! There is an SDA thread on this site that provides daily links and members sometimes sell some as well.
I don't think the current Polk sound is a lot like the Monitor 10s...but it may be more refined on the high end?
Now we'll wait for the others...OK?

Here is the manual, page 5-6 for placement recommendations.
Also a pdf of the specs for the stands. They should tilt back 6 degrees to time align the drivers."Don't forget to change your politician. They are like diapers they need to be changed regularly, and for the same reason." -
For some reason, it won't let me upload the stand pdf. PM me if you need it.
edit--or post here since you can't pm yet."Don't forget to change your politician. They are like diapers they need to be changed regularly, and for the same reason." -
Thank you Seeclear and cnh!!
So the 6 degree tilt is the important number, is overall height? I'm used to having the tweeters up about 42inches or so (ear height while seated) or does the height of the stand and tilt take care of that?
I'll look into the tweeters. These are nice speakers, and I might upgrade the tweeters and xover in the 5's for mixing/monitoring.
I must admit that I don't know anything about the new LSI line, but to top the 10's for overall sound and imaging, they would have to be a decent speaker.
SDA's, would love a pair, but then I like being married too...
Thanks again

I have a set of Peerless 10A's myself that I just picked up a few weeks ago, I absolutely love them. As for the LSi series, they are def. a decent speaker. They are Polk's top of the line for a reason, and anyone who has heard them will agree. I look forward to tweeking/modding my 10's someday, but for now I need to assemble the rest of my 2 ch. rig before I spend anymore on the speakers.

Here is a link from 2004 that has drawings for the stands and DIY parts list. PDFs are a few posts down on the first page. Welcome to the forum. -

Here is my 5B modification thread. Highly recommend the RD0194-1 silk dome replacement tweeters as well as the x-over refresh and Mortite (rope caulk) seal in place of the old gaskets. It will transform the speaker by leaps and bounds

You can do the exact same thing to the 10's too.
