I ran across the goodwill auction site a few weeks ago. I have been drooling ever since. How can people actually toss this stuff? I mean what value would you declare on your donation receipt for this?

I see McIntosh show up on the Goodwill auction site from time to time. It is very tempting.

The only real thing in this amp's favor is the name on the side. A quick search showed that it is not among the most desired Mcintosh amps out there.

If you've ever listened to an MC-2100, your drooling is likely to stop.
I have one in my attic (no mean feat); the only reason I keep it is that they do have some "street value".

The vaccum tube Mac power amps are worlds better sounding (just my hardly humble opinon)... unfortunately, I don't have one of those in the attic.

Agreed, not one of their better sounding offerings. I've sold a couple of them, and there is NO way I would trust them to pack it properly, even if I wanted it. They aren't lightweights.

    Cheers,

I appreciate all your interest, or lack of in the 2100. It was just an example of some of the things that I have seen run through in the past few weeks.

It was probably pulled from grandpa's estate after his passing, and they had no idea what it was another than a heavy peice of metal, thus thrown in the donation pile. McIntosh to most people is a type of apple.

    Fixed. ;)

Their newer SS amps do sound pretty good.

I just checked out the site--
I find it odd to find a Nintendo DSi XL on there--I mean the thing was only just released about 2 weeks ago (Mar 28 2010 to be exact). It would have to still be under a 30 day return policy.

I have a 2100 in my system and it works great as an amp for my sub. 200+ watts of Mac power (bridged to mono). It is very gutsy on the low end but it is not a great sounding amp for full range. These amps are still tanks-well built and sound pretty good especially if you have a set of speakers that tend to be a bit bright. They can also be modded with new caps etc and that improves them quite a bit. I had a pair of 250s that I ran as a pair of mono blocks (bridged to mono) and they also sounded pretty good after mods. Not the best amps but plenty of guts.

I suspect that's a good application for an MC-2100 and have indeed considered using mine for such a purpose. On paper, though, the low damping factor wouldn't be ideal (still, ell worth a try). The subwoofer I am using now in the living room hifi is a powered one, so it's sort of a non-issue at the moment.

One of the worst sounding things I've ever heard was a pair of Klipsch Cornwalls powered by this selfsame MC-2100. Talk about harsh and grating "solid state sound", whoo-boy.

My system was built for music and the occasional movie-I think we watch 1 about every month or so. The sub gets the LFE information only. For that the 2100 works quite well. I guess I don't care if the bottom end of and explosion has an edge on it or not.

Speaking of MC-2100s; if any of youse guys gets the urge to spiff one up, there was a pretty good article on refurbishing 'em in audioXpress a few years back (looks like it was Feb. 2004).

see www.audioxpress.com or PM me for more information.
