The physical manifestation that if you attach a powerful enough engine to a brick, it will fly.
    You have to love thrust.

I can sit and watch these and others practice at Elmendorf AFB all day long. I consider it money and time well spent. My hats are off to these guys as they can only be described as masters of their craft.

I have spent a modest amount of time in military aircraft and can only say from my interaction with them that they are the utmost professionals.

Yup - that's what they did with the F-4 "Phantom"..aka "Pigs in Space". :D

Yup - been there, worked there -and Eielson too - saw the B2 there up close...well as close as the flight line while working there...can't get too close with armed guards carrying M16s :D

Fun working the flightline at Nellis, El Centro, Yuma, Miramar (when Top Gun and the F14s were there), Whidbey Isl. - get to seel lots of cool stuff up close. Full burner take offs at Nellis in the evening for a Red Flag exercise is something to see/hear!

    ET,
Hope you have recovered from being stationed at Eielson. I know Snow will probably jump in here and defend the interior, but I spent 6.5 years there and still have no desire to ever spend another winter in that area.
My first real experience with A-10's was at Eielson. A peculiar sounding aircraft, that one. Always wanted a flight on one of those.

You wanted a ride in a "warthog"? :D

I only did a 6-week stint for an install at Eielson...but in the dead of winter in March.

We would make the daily drive from Fairbanks to Eielson...in the dark...come back...in the dark.

Used to stop by "The North Pole" for coffee every morning - played a game that whoever could guess the temperature on the thermometer outside the coffee shop would get his coffee 'free'.

Coldest was -34F, but I'm sure it gets colder sometime.

    Saw the Aurora B. while there....wow....freaky man....:D

George - that's an oddity of aircraft in a show fer sure...a Delta Dart spinning next to Starlifter?

Can't say I've seen a "Thud" fly the deck, but I did for a Phantom and a Super Sabre waayyy back while I was a wee lad at an air show. My dad was an AF flight instructor at Canon AFB, NM. ;)
We represented all the military aircraft that were stationed in Jersey at the time, to include a "D" model F-4 that was flying simulated CAP for our "formation" a couple thousand feet above us. So you had us at about 1,500 with the -141 in the contact postion, but not contacted, and the -106 from the Jersey Air Guard at Atlantic City doing the spins off the -141's two o'clock at about 50 feet. I remembered the -106 driver's name was Paterno, so if you're out there chief, nice show.

The F-4 unit flew -105's up until about 1981 or 1982, traded them in for "D" model F-4's, then "E" models. Then they were supposed to get F-16's, but pissed somebody in Washington off and got tankers instead. That's where I got all the exposure to the -105's from my early years, the squadron on the other side of the base! Plus, refueling all the other -105 units in the area DC Air Guard at Andrews, Virginia Air Guard out of Richmond, etc. The Jersey Devils down at Atlantic city are flying F-16's now, and they put one in the bays every year or two. I don't remember that when that had the -106's. What I do remember was every time they came up to refuel, you could've eaten off those things. Talk about all go-fast shiny and ****.

I finally got to Cannon towards the end of my career Erik. That is the most god forsaken airbase I have ever been to in the US, and I have been to ALL the dreaded SAC northern-tier bases. I can't imagine what it would have been like being a young person growing up there. That is what I gave a great deal of thought to while I was there. BLEAK! I believe it just recently got a reprieve from being shut down. I can't imagine what locals would do there without the airbase. I also got THE BEST, Mexican, I have ever had. Bad neighborhood, looked like somebody's house, no liquor license, AWESOME food.

A helpful guide for how cold it is outside is if your propane stove stops working because the gas in the tank is now a liquid. Happens at about -44F. Ask me how I know, and how to fix it. A battery blanket ziptied to the outside, and plugged into a wall switch will keep the tank warm enough to keep it gaseous.
Coldest I have seen was 62 below, with no wind. Even it didn't want to be outside in that temperature.

As a note, I meant the A-10 when I was referring to riding a 'warthog'. Not some of the fine local ladies in that neck o' the woods.
