Can anyone explain this? (Monitor 11)

Upon removing the grills from the Monitor 11s, I was struck by the oddly shaped cutout around the tweeter. I slipped a sheet of paper between the cutout and the fabric, so that the shape of the cutout would stand out in the pic. I'm assuming that this affects the dispersion of sound from the tweeter and also that the grill was specifically designed like this for a reason. If that's the case, I guess Polk designed this speaker for use with grills on. Just wondering if anyone knew anything about this or had any thoughts in it.

Maybe Ken Swauger can provide some insight? I had those for years and never noticed the cutout. -
You are correct, it is for dispersion (defraction control). In their tech literature for the RTA8TL & RTA11TL they even mention that the speaker sounds better with the grill ON. The RTA11TL grills are not so oddly shaped but my Monitor 5A's are.

Perhaps Polk should claim some sort of copyright infringement against Tivo!:pBlueMDPicker wrote: »Maybe Ken Swauger can provide some insight? I had those for years and never noticed the cutout.
You really never noticed this? How did you usually listen to these - grills on or off?
Just for reference, I added a red dot to the pic to show where the tweeter sits behind the cutout.
Ken? Are you out there? -

I always had the grilles on, don't ever remember listening to them naked. -
