bass cancellation

I am running 2 subwoofers, people have talked about one cancelling the other one out, they are normally set @180,at this setting the bass is a lot more pronounced and boomier,i set one at 0 and left the other @ 180,this produces a smoother sound. Both settings sound good but different.Which of these settings would create the cancellation,my assumption is in the 0 and 180 setting, but i've been wrong before.like i stated earlier they both sound good, but which is correct. Thanks in advance for any input.

Whichever you like best is correct.I run 3 subs all at 0. -
Generally, if the subs are in the same plane, say the front soundstage, phase should be set the same, usually 0. If you have one in front and another in back, then front 0, back 180. If you've got sidewall subs, it will depend. The only way to truly know what your subs are doing is to measure by running tones and using something like REW/SPL meter to graph the sweeps and see the dips, chasms, peaks, etc, then adjusting phase, speaker distance and positioning to get the optimal frequency response.
