Ok....if i was to buy a SB duet...what else would i need???

i'm using a logitech 2.4 gb wireless box:rolleyes: is that good enough for high quality tunes?

i have at least 2 old pc's sitting around...how much space would 500 or so cd's take, in the best format?

what kind of software needs to be installed to manage the cd's?

thanks, guys

mike

    It's actually pretty easy.

You buy the Squeezebox Duet, which comes with the remote and the receiver. You hook the receiver up to your pre-amp or whatever you have, install the Squeezebox software on your computer, point it to your music library, and it will add the music to its "library" for streaming.

From there, all you need is a wireless router to stream the music or, if your system is close enough to the router, you could also run an ethernet cable directly to the Squeezebox receiver. You can control the tunes from a web interface on your computer or the remote control, which you can carry around with you and use wherever your wireless router can reach it.

I'm not sure what is "required" for an Internet connection, but I have a 12Mbps download speed connection and it runs without any problems whatsoever.

As far as getting your music onto your computer, if you have a lot of CD's that you'd like to listen to in "full quality" (i.e., not mp3's), just download the free program called "Exact Audio Copy". This lets you pop your CD's into a drive capable of burning CD's and copy them to your hard drive in "FLAC" format (lossless, so one of the best formats).

To give you an idea of how much space the music takes, my current Squeezebox library is about 8000 tracks, approximately half of which are FLAC files with the other half being mp3's (which take up less space), and it is taking up about 200 GB total.

Hope that answers your questions. Now go get a Squeezebox because they are AWESOME ;)

I'm a little confused about what you mean by the above. What piece of equipment are you referring to - a PC? or ?

Based off the average size of my CD rips (majority in FLAC), the average size is around 370 MB per album. So 500 CDs ripped to FLAC should be somewhere around ~185GB.

So, a wireless router, I guess. Sounds like you have everything you need, except the duet. Keep in mind that individual receivers are no longer available new. Also, an iPod touch can make for a better remote than what's included with the duet.

also think about the squeezebox touch which was just released.. it has a USB connection for a standalone HD so you don't even have to stream the music if you don't want to.
    Main 2ch -
    BlueSound Node->Ethereal optical cable->Peachtree Audio Nova 150->GoldenEar Triton 2+
TT - Pro-ject Classic SB with Sumiko Bluepoint.

Agree to this. IPod makes a nice remote. Just install the remote app, configure itunes, and you can play and control the music your computer is playing with you ipod, wirelessly.

Oh, I meant that the iPod touch makes a nice squeezebox remote when you use one of the squeezebox apps, like iPeng. Of course, if you connect your pc to your audio system, your ways works too.

The ipod touch/squeezebox touch combo looks like a great solution! I have this sitting in my Amazon cart, but would like to hear any issues/feedback/recommendation before I checkout.

I purchased the duet early last year, but it didn't work out for me because my ancient PC was a weak link in the streaming process....the touch obviously solves this with the ability to work with a standalone HD. Any thoughts on the limitations of using an ipod touch as a remote? Ideally I will be able to use the ipod touch from outside (squeezebox will be inside connected to the preamp which controls the outside speakers) to change tracks, select stations, and even mute the squeezebox....

If you do buy a squeezebox you might consider some upgrades depending on how you are going to use it (analog vs digital) Bolder cable has some nice upgrades that you can get done www.boldercables.com. Also a cheap upgrade is the power supply. It has a switching PS and it's easy to upgrade. I think frys has them for about 25 bucks.

also the palm pre has an app that works with the SB. Squeeze control.
I like to listen, tinker, listen and repeat.
