i've had my onkyo503 reciever about 5 years. now that i have a bluray player with 5.1 input capability. i'm currently running a 7.1 set up. i was wondering if i would hear much of a difference in my movies if i used the 5.1 outputs on my bluray player?

I doubt it. Those analog outputs on the Blu-ray player are mainly for connecting it to an older surround receiver that doesn't have digital inputs or HDMI.
They're also used for hi-res music formats, such as SACD and DVD-Audio.The nirvana inducer-

it depends on which decoder is better. I would assume the newer one in the player is better than the 5yrs old on the avr. it's just the matter of which device is doing the decoding.

With an older receiver that doesn't have HDMI you have to use the 5.1 analog hookup from the BD player to your AVR to get the HD codec. Digital doesn't cut it with the new audio formats. It's either HDMI or 5.1 analog."2 Channel & 11.2 HT "Two Channel:Magnepan LRSSchiit Audio Freya S - SS preConsonance Ref 50 - Tube preParasound HALO A21+ 2 channel ampBluesound NODE 2i streameriFi NEO iDSD DAC Oppo BDP-93KEF KC62 sub Home Theater:Full blown 11.2 set up.

i'm aware of the new hd formats and that i need hdmi. if in order to experience full hd sound. but what i'm wondering is if i don't have a reciever with hdmi audio outs. would it make a difference in my sound if i use the 5.1 inputs.

If your blueray player can decode the HD resolution and send it out to your AVR via the 5.1 analog, you should hear a big improvement. Try it and see. -
ok thank you so much.

Player decoded hd audio via multichannel analog outs is 'full hd sound'. Just make sure you have everything 'dialed in' correctly on the player as you may have to do many of the same 'set-up' things with the player that you had to do with the AVR since you are bypassing much of the AVR's processing. What you are doing is substituting your player for your AVR in decoding the HD audio and further processing it to analog which the AVR would have had to do anyways before sending it on to the analog speakers. It's as if you took the AVR out of the loop and it's just passing the signal on to be amplified to your speakers. -
So what you're really asking (if everything is dialed in correctly...): Is TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, and uncompressed LPCM via analog outs better than Dolby Digital and the DTS core available via coax?
Enjoy the lossless...you should really notice the difference as others have said. -

You don't need HDMI to get HD sound. The 5.1 analog audio outs gets you there with just a few more cables."2 Channel & 11.2 HT "Two Channel:Magnepan LRSSchiit Audio Freya S - SS preConsonance Ref 50 - Tube preParasound HALO A21+ 2 channel ampBluesound NODE 2i streameriFi NEO iDSD DAC Oppo BDP-93KEF KC62 sub Home Theater:Full blown 11.2 set up. -

Lol, yeah, just a few...at least six thick ICs going from the player to the AVR is more like a waterfall of cables that can be hard to fit in a tight cabinet. Add in a bunch of component video and digital audio connections when I was first starting to put my rig together and it was a pretty daunting cable management problem. For all its faults, hdmi has really helped streamline the cable mess that used to be my rig. -

it's gonna be hard going back to 5.1 until i can get a full dh reciver. i've been running 7.1 set up since i got the reciver back in 8005. i guess to upgrade means you gotta downgrade so to speak.

Still only 7.1 in the year 8005? I am soooo disappointed by the lack of progress -
