My dream setup would be having a live concert venue in my back yard that all the best groups and musicians paid me to perform at.

Until then I doubt I will ever be truly content with my rig, as I am always finding things I can do better.
The Gear... Carver "Statement" Mono-blocks, Mcintosh C2300 Arcam AVR20, Oppo UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player, Sony XBR70x850B 4k, Polk Audio Legend L800 with height modules, L400 Center Channel Polk audio AB800 "in-wall" surrounds. Marantz MM7025 stereo amp. Simaudio Moon 680d DSD

    My dream rig?

Let's see...this is the dream rig that I may realistically be able to put together over time. I'm not going to list any 100k gear or anything like that...I don't even like to look at that stuff, because I'd never buy it even if I did have the money.

I'll list a couple different rigs, since eventually I'll have an integrated 2 channel/HT rig, along with a dedicated 2 channel rig. I'll start with the 2 channel/HT

Digital source-Sony SCD-XA5400ES(possibly modded by Modwright). I'd also have an Oppo BDP-83SE as a video source, and as a secondary 2 channel source. The Oppo also offers HDCD decoding, which the Sony doesn't have. Both the Oppo and the Sony can also send multi-channel SACD, which is somewhat of a plus, though I almost never listen to music in surround sound.

DAC for other digital sources-Possibly a Cambridge DACMagic...but that ones up in the air still.

Turntable?-I probably wouldn't have this rig set up for vinyl.

    AVR-Either an Onkyo TX-NR1007, or a Pioneer Elite SC-27

Preamp-Parasound Halo P7. This preamp offers basically the best HT bypass section that I've ever seen. It has full passthrough for a 7.1 setup, with onboard bass management, so that you can run subs in 2 channel, while still retaining your subwoofer settings in the AVR for movies.

amp(s)-Parasound Halo A21 for the front L/R, and a Parasound Halo A51 for center/surrounds/surround backs.

Speakers-I'd probably go for a full LSi setup in this rig. LSi15's up front, with an LSiC center. LSiFX for the surrounds, and LSi9's for surround backs. I'd probably go with dual Epik Empires for the subs.

Cabling? I don't know that part yet.

    Power conditioner-APC H15

    Now...the 2 channel rig.

digital source-Marantz SA-11S2, modded by Modwright. Though the Marantz and the Sony 5400ES from the 2 channel/HT may get swapped around from time to time, as both are supposed to be STELLAR CD/SACD players. According to everything I've read around the net, these are basically the two best CDP's you can get, without spending uber-money.

    DAC? Unsure.

    Turntable-Music Hall MMF-7.1

Phono stage-unsure on this part too....

    Preamp-Parasound Halo JC2, or a Pass Labs XP-10.

Amp(s)-Either a Pass Labs X250.5, or possibly a pair of Pass Labs XA100.5 monoblocks.

Speakers-Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Super Towers, with dual custom Tyler Acoustics subwoofers, that use the same Seas drivers as the Super Towers. I'm referring to something like Sid's dual Tyler subs...although I've considered going crazy, and using two 10" drivers in each sub!

Cables-Audioquest Colorado IC's, with the 72v DBS system. Audioquest Volcano speaker cables, with 72v DBS system. I'd also probably be using Signal Cable MagicPower power cables.

Power Conditioner-PS Audio Power Plant Premier.

I'm sure I forgot a few things in there...I might change it around a little later...lol
    The nirvana inducer-
    APC H10 Power Conditioner
    Marantz UD5005 universal player
    Parasound Halo P5 preamp
    Parasound HCA-1200II power amp
    PolkAudio LSi9's/PolkAudio SDA 2A's/PolkAudio Monitor 7A's

Dynaudio top end or Tyler Acoustics perhaps... the Linbrooks I had briefly until the wife came home were really a dream come true.

Parasound JC-1s.... Cambridge Audio 840C.... Benchmark DAC1-usb for PC.

There's always better speakers to move up to. However, I would be just as happy with some nice LSi's in a really HUGE room. Perhaps 50'x60' with 30' ceilings. Put the speakers right in the center of the room so the speakers can breath.

Altec A5 Voice of the Theatres with 1505 horns and AlNiCo 288 HF drivers would be nice.

I think I have pretty much all of the other speakers I dreamt about...

I'd like to have a Pass labs power amp, but don't see myself spending the 5 large to get the one I want. And while already affordable, a ModWright SWL9.0SE Pre looks tempting too.

I would like to try some Wilson Watt Puppies. Perhaps paired with some ARC mono's. A Wadia CD player would be nice. And a really nice TT but that might never happen. I dunno, I will probably slow down on major purchases after I get a nice amp and some Vandy 3a sigs. This hobby is too damn expensive to keep chasing the next "hit".

    Hello,
It would have one of these:
    The Ampex MR-70: (ca. 1968)

Without any argument the best tube Ampex ever made, probably the best analog tape deck ever made, period. This machine was an all-out effort to make a cost-is-no-object, state of the art recorder.

Transport is similar to the 300, but considerably beefed up. Nuvistor electronics. Custom-wound transformers, metal film resistors, film capacitors, etc., etc. Available in many track configurations, up to eight tracks on one-inch tape, and speed pairs of 7.5/15 ips or 15/30 ips. Some track configurations (e.g., two track on half inch tape) anticipate today's preferred analog formats; some configurations were available only on special order.

It and the much-despised Model 400 series were the only Ampexes before the ATR-100 to have constant tension. Completely mu-metal shielded. Motor drive to reel idler for faster starts. Allegedly fewer than 100 made. Parts not shared with the 300 are scarce to the point of being impossible to get.

According to Bill Vermillion, a Studer engineer once told him that Willi Studer's goal in life was to make a tape recorder better than the MR-70. He tried for two decades; then came to the conclusion that he could equal it but not surpass it. All-in-all, a fantastically elegant piece of industrial design. See Rein Narma and Mort Fujii, "Performance and Reliability Requirements for a Master Tape Recorder," Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, v. 12, no. 4 (Oct. 1964): 274-279 for a full discussion of the rationale behind the MR-70's design. Microphone preamps plugged in to octal tube sockets and usually are not present.

We felt that 1/2" 3-track was a special format that deserved special treatment. So, we've rebuilt the ultimate 1/2" 3-track machine - the legendary Ampex MR-70.

The Ampex MR-70 is the final and best sounding professional vacuum tube analog tape recorder ever built. There are many who feel that the sound of this machine has never been surpassed. It is believed that Ampex technicians hand-made only 50 of them and that every one was in some way custom-built.
