Adjusting subwoofer gain

What is the best way to adjust the amount of 'gain' on your sub other than by ear? I just bought a SVS PC12-NCD and I have want I always wanted, more low bass than I need but I don't want to over do it. My HT room is
12' x 24' x 8'.

Any advise would be appreciated.

What type of avr do you have? Did you calibrate it?

Just from my tweaking around/experience. Its a safe bet to set the gain around 11 or 12 o'clock then use your avr gain or channel level to adjust.

Using an SLP meter can help to get it around the magic 75db.

I have a Yamaha Rx V995 and no I haven't calibrated it. The receiver is 10 years old and as far as I remember on the sub adjustment you have a choice of normal (or zero) or -10db. I think that is correct.

Then the cheapest way to get it calibrated would be to get the slp meter and run test tones. Set all your speakers to 75db and the sub 75db-80db depending on how "hot" you like your sub:)

Best way is to upgrade that avr. your giving up so much by using a 10yr old avr. Think about HDMI and all the DAC's you could bennifit from. ;)
