Broken Denon 1920 dvd player

I need advice on what to do with or how to fix my denon 1920 dvd player. I use this dvd player almost every night to watch movies or listen to music. I used it one night last week to watch a movie it worked flawlessly. The next night i go up to my room to go to bed. I turn on the dvd player and the tv the little reading disc icon comes on the screen for about 10 seconds and then the dvd player shuts off :mad:! I tried it again with a different disk and it did the same thing. So i left it alone for a couple days and just watched movies on another player in the house. I tried it again after a few days of inactivity and it does the same thing.
I am just wondering if anyone that has a denon dvd player has had a similar problem. or if there is a quick fix for this. Any info is appriciated.
Sincerely,
Kevin

The one I had lasted 2 years and some months then just quit one day. It would no longer output video. Last denon anything I've purchased since.Parasound C1, T3, HCA-3500, HCA-2205A, P/DD1550, Pioneer DV-79avi, Oppo BDP-83, WD Media Server W/HDD,
Dynaudio Contour 3.3, Dynaudio Contour T2.1, Polk OWM3, Polk DSW micropro 1000 (x2),
Pioneer Kuro 50" Plasma, Phillips Pronto Control w/Niles HT-MSU. -
Does it completely shut OFF? More commonly they will stop reading disks and display all "0's".
Mine was doing this and getting worse. I read that it was likely the optical pickup and that it would cost more to repair than what I paid for the thing. I tried cleaning it with one of those cleaning disks with no success. Having nothing to loose, I opened it up and very, very gently physically cleaned the optic with a micro-fiber cloth for cleaning camera lenses. I said a prayer, reassembled and it works fantastic. It reads everything but the worst scratched disks that I throw at it. Must have been the prayer.

It was completly shutting off but after I posted this last night I tried it again last night and it stayed on but would not read any discs. I will try taking it apart:eek: and cleaning it with a lens cleaning cloth and see if this works. Thank you for the advice and I will let you know if it works.
Thanks,

If you do attempt to clean the lens, be very careful. I had formed the cleaning cloth to make a kind of bubble and used only enough force to slightly compress the bubble. I then followed with a gentle spray of compressed air.
Laser diodes tend to be very Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) sensitive. Therefore, try the cleaning procedure as a last resort.
Let us know how it works. So far, mine is the only case that I am aware of that this has been attempted. Most folks send it out to have the mechanism/optics replaced or chuck the unit.Stan

I will try to clean the lens when I get a chance as I dont have the money to have the player fixed at this time nor do I want to spend any money on it at this time. I will take all said precautions and be as careful as possible as to not damage the diode. Thank you again for the advice.

Thanks for the links. I have not had a chance to try to clean up the lens on this player but if that is not the problem I will look at the other players to replace it. I would really hate to have to replace the Denon as it has been a great player in both playing movies and the sound quality in both cds and sacds.
