San Fransisco(need I say more?) has declared that Mondays shall be meatless.
If you live in the city by the bay, you now have one more reason to stay in bed on Monday!

No big deal. It is symbolic. I remember when I was a kid attending parochial school, and being indoctrinated with Catholic propaganda. In those days we could not eat meat on Fridays, as it was a mortal sin. This meant if you had a hamburger on Friday you would burn in hell forever. This is what helped make me an atheist. I could never get a good answer as to why Hitler would burn in hell forever, and I would too for having a hamburger on Friday.
Yes, inaccuracy will do that. I would have asked where that was written (that you could not eat meat on Fridays).
If I still lived near San Francisco, I would go to the House of Prime Rib every monday.:D

I can relate as I went to parochial school. One of the things I hated about being a practicing Catholic was I was walking around in a constant state of guilt, however, now I go to the source for the Laws of God.
I'm in a constant state of debate with my devoutly Catholic Mother-in-Law and when the discussion gets out-of-hand, I ask her to show me in my Bible where it says 'that', her retort, "it's in my Bible," my retort, "here's a copy of YOUR Bible, show me!" The buck stops there and she says I'm going to hell. My reply is always, "contrary to what we were taught as Catholics (which I am no longer) the Pope and the college of Cardinals are just men with an agenda of dogma and not infallible."
I'm not downing any Catholics out there I am just making a point of going to the source for the those Laws rather than letting someone else interpret it for me. -

And of course, SF couldn't make Friday meatless, because that would sound too
much like they were endorsing a Catholic belief. Monday it is.
So, is fish allowed, or only certain veggies. Maybe eggplant on Monday,
general salads on Tuesday. Add calling the boy scouts a Fascist group,
I guess their trip to to dark side is complete."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -

I was raised Catholic as well and as I got older I found myself at odds with a lot of their teachings...and the recent scandals in the Church have really put me off I think for good. My wife grew up Methodist with mostly Baptist Relatives, and we've been going to United Methodist recently, and I find myself just shaking my head at the Catholic Church..and their claim of Infallibility. It will certainly be interesting when we have kids and telling my mother that our children, won't be baptized in the Catholic Church. anyway now that the thread has been completely threadjacked.. i will just be quietMain 2ch -

The thing it unfortunately DOES have an impact on is the budget; someone spent countless hours and government dollars passing this initiative through town government to get it approved, further wasting taxpayer dollars that will have to be wringed out of citizens somehow.
I don't live there, so I couldn't care less, but the fact that those who DO live there shrug off these completely wasteful things is telling. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
You know, you people...
The Catholic Church is NOT infallible. You mental midgets need to get past what you think you know and find out what the truth really is. The Pope is the only one infallible and that is ONLY in respect to the teachings of the Church. That is because The Pope is considered to be a conduit of God and teaches through Divine Inspiration.
In all other matters, including Canon Law, The Pope, The College of Cardinals and the rest of the congregation of clergy do not retain the infallible status.
Now, religion is not supposed to be discussed here. The fact that so many people "practice" a religion that they know nothing about and make ignorant comments on other religions that they know even more nothing about is the main reason that such discussion are verboten.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

The problem is that those in charge of TEACHING said religion are the ones passing misinformation to their congregations. I can't tell you the amount of conflicting / wrong information I got from CCD classes when I was younger, and lots of people just grow up with all of these false ideas. You can't really blame people for being misinformed when those in "power" tell them the wrong thing. If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

CCD classes are not the teachings that the infallibility refers to. The infallibility refers to teachings like interpretations of the meanings in gospels and other scripture, homilies/sermons and guidance. Those such teachings are are given in Church at the service you attend, not CCD class. Even though CCD class does teach about the common teachings of Jesus, those teachings come from the scripture. The teachings in CCD are curriculum based and often laid out by lay people using an outline provided by the church. If your CCD teacher is taking liberty with the outline and misinforming your students then you should bring it to the attention of the education administrator at your diocesan center and they will have it fixed or remove the teacher.
But just because some moron teacher in your church is taking liberty with the curriculum doesn't mean the whole of the Catholic Church is wrong.
Again, this is religion, discuss it elsewhere but preferably not with me. I cannot tolerate discussing religion with people who are misinformed. I do not have the patience nor inclination to educate those who could not be bothered to pay attention when they were being taught the first time around.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

I was also raised catholic... alter boy and all(never touched) and had given thought to joining the priesthood. That ended when I asked just three questions of Father Don...
The first pertained to the first commandment and all the services we held for all the different saints and the prayers offered to them. Father Don turned red. The second was about a statue and the missing halo around the baby Jesus head when Mary had one. He got redder.
The final one had to to with the image of the lord hanging from a cross in death above the alter rather than being shown as the risen savior we believe him to be.
I never got an answer. rather I was shown the door and in a not so kind way, asked never to return.

It's not ego.
I'm not infallible either. I just research and verify my statements before I make them. If I don't know anything about a subject, I won't interject. There are plenty of topics here that I don't participate in. The ones I do participate in, I back up my statements to avoid the petty pissing matches that result when an inaccuracy is corrected. It's something everyone should do instead of just running off at the mouth. So, instead of following the example, others just mock me with statements about being the CEO of Ford, that I should be on Jeopardy, that I will tell Alex Trebek that he's wrong and that Jeopardy is only a half hour show. All because I research my argument, I post references and explain my argument in detail so that I do not leave anything open ended so others cannot twist my words to use against me in a petty attempt to try and cut me down. Yeah, I appreciate it. Then you call me a jerk when I don't respond well to your "fun and yuks" at my expense. I can't post my response to that idea or I'll get banned.
I don't want to discuss religion with people because they cannot separate the theology aspect of it from the faith based aspect. When you discuss theology, your basis for your faith will be questioned. 90% of those who believe in something cannot handle that. Instead of seeing it as an opportunity to better understand their belief system, they view it as an affront to their personal psyche and lash out like a hurt little child. I do not fear religious discussions. I actually quite enjoy them...if I can find someone who can handle it. I've taken classes on catechism and theology. I've had my own faith questioned and I've come out a better person because of it. I probably know more about other religions from the theology classes than most people who follow those religions. Except maybe Muslims. Those guys know their religion very well. But one thing bugs me. My belief or non-belief in God has no bearing on the discussion of the tenets of Catholicism.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Mental Midget? You can't be referring to me John because I know more about this topic than you could ever dream. My comments are not ignorant! I was relating a conversation I was having with my mother-in-law that's when this infalliblity nonsense came up.
What you've said here, any one who knows the least little bit about the topic knows about it. Stop trying to be the authority on everything. There are people on this earth who know more than you.
BTW if this is 'VERBOTEN" why are you pointing fingers but getting into it yourself.
If you would like to discuss this whole topic of the Catholic church's teachings vs. what is truly in the Bible I would gladly take it to PM or a telephone call with you because I fear we are treading on thin ice here. -

The Jeopardy Thread was a light hearted joke John. Not mocking! As a matter of fact I believe you should have taken it as a compliment as it shows how many people read your long posts.

When did I mention The Bible? The question of the infallibility of the Church came up and multiple inaccurate statements were made. I addressed them. My statements were responded to with contradictory statements offering no evidence. I replied with what I know to be the truth. I'm not looking to continue discussing it. There's really nothing left to discuss about it. I've said that multiple times. But if you are going to respond and attempt to question my position, I'm going to clarify my statements in regards to your questioning.hearingimpared wrote: »Wow John, I had no idea that you couldn't take a joke. If you have to precursor your statements with an apology then honestly, how else is it supposed to be taken?
I don't take it as a compliment. I find it pathetic. If you don't like me, don't start threads deliberately calling me out. Just ignore me and go on about your day. But I'm not the only one who found the thread in poor taste. I didn't even see the thread until I got home later in the evening and saw numerous PM's pointing the thread out to me. Underhanded comments abound about me elsewhere as well. I know how it is. I'm not blind nor stupid. And they are all "joking", right? Yeah, like I said, if you have to apologize for your statement before you make it, should you really be making it?Expert Moron Extraordinaire
