How about the combinations

Hello,
I was advised to have the following HT combinations, and would like to get some comments from the forum.
TSI400 for main L, R
VM20 for Center
RM8 for Rear
With these combination, what receiver is recommended? and what's the suggest subwoofer?
Any input is appreciated.

Welcome to Club Polk liehli, don't know if I agree 100% with those recommendations, but that is just my $.02. I would suggest a CS20 center for your 400's and either the TSi 100's/200's for your surrounds. There are a lot of factors that can change what we suggest, like room size/layout, size restraints for center/surrounds, and things like that. Also, look into the Monitor series as well, they are very similar to the TSi's and cost about half as much. IMHO, for the prices they can be had for these days, they are hard to beat. As for a sub, the PSW505 is about the best bang for the buck going these days, at $250 shipped from Newegg, it is hard to beat. Does very well for HT and is a pretty good sub for music, if calibrated right. Depending on how much you want to spend, look into Velodyne, SVS, and Epik to name a few. They are higher end subs and can run a few bucks as well. Also Polk's DSW series is a very good sub as well. Receivers are a bit tricky to suggest the exact one you should get since they all have so many different options and other things that set them aparet from each other. A few things to look at are whether or not you will need the ability to decode the new HD formats, what type of speakers you will be running, and making sure it has pre outs for adding an external amp down the road. Start with brands like Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer and try to find one in your budget, and what you need it to do. I would suggest you look for models with pre outs, to better future proof your investment. You may not want to add an external amp now, but if I had a dollar for everytime someone came back a few months later looking for suggestions for an amp, and the AVR they bought didn't have pre outs. These are just my suggestions, I'm sure there will be more. Oh, lastly, a budget would help too, lol.

WELCOME TO CLUB POLK!
It is NOT generally a good idea to mismatch your three front speakers, so I agree with Jeff...get yourself a CS20...rears are less important but I'd still stay in the TSI series.
AVRs....what's your budget...in the midrange...go listen to some Onkyos and Pioneers--see what you like (Onkyo 707 or 807, Pioneer Elite VSX-21, and the Marantz 5004)
Subs...again what's your budget. A good budget sub is Elemental subs (check them out on the web). If you have more to spend...SVS, Velodyne, Hsu and others Jeff mentions are good...also take a listen to the Polk DSWpro600.
But most of all..'go out and listen' and search the forums some?
Good luck

Thanks for you guys' recommendations. I know it is better not to mix the three front speakers, but my brother gave them to me, so it's free.
Regarding the receiver and subwoofer. My budget is $1500 total for both; and my living room is 6mx6m. Onkyo 807+polk DSWpro400 are good enough or better recommendations? -
That's a decent sized room about 19' by 19' in U.S. measurements (if you have an 8' height you'd have almost 2900 cubic feet so you need a pretty good sub) so I would go with the larger DSWpro600 in there. I'd spend at least 500 or MORE on the sub. See if you can get a sale or a used piece like an SVS, HSU, Velodyne, Epik, or Elemental sub (each has a home page...and they're all quality subs).
I'd try to get that 807 for a sale price so as to accomodate the SUB...or even drop to the 707 in order to allocate more money to the sub--you won't regret it and the 807 is really not that much more powerful than a 707.

If this is true, just know that square rooms are brutal on acoustics. You will probably have to invest in room treaments to counter-act the effects of the square room. -

+1, C makes some good recomandations here. I wouldn't step any lower than the 700 series from Onkyo if you go that route, as the 600 series and lower does not have pre outs for adding an external amp. Something you may not be intrested in now, but may want in the future. Always better to have them and not need them, then have to go out an buy a new AVR that has them when you decide you want them, lol.
