I picked up a Panasonic DVD-A 5 disc changer from Crutchfield for 149.99, the F85 model. Have wanted to try this format for a while and thought this would be a good way to see if I like it for just a little dough.
OK so I get the Eagles Hotel Ca. disc and its playing now, I am using those in box wires I had laying around while I wait for those Monster 950i to get here, so not sure how well I am getting all the sound out of this player. But I can tell that the disc has a much warmer sound, more like an LP. I am getting good sound channel separation across the front stage. Am getting very little though from my surronds which are set to dipole and do not really think changing them would matter much. For some reason the players bass management does not give me a test tone for the center or surround speakers, will have to call panny and see whats up with this. Now, the player tells me I am getting all six channels, but receiver says playing Dolby Pro Logic, this seems to make sense though since is an analog signal, right? Is there a certain DPS that these discs should be set to? Or just Dolby Pro?

Are you using the 6 channel output on the player or just the left and right stereo outputs? You need 6 rca's hooked up to get the surround in dvd-a format. On your receiver you will select the 6 channel input. If you are using a digital coax or optical then you would be hearing the dolby digital track.
If you are using the 6 rca's and are still having problems, check the settings of the dvd player. I've seen some players where you have to manually turn on the center and surrounds in the menu. -
Fire,
Yes I am using the 5.1 channel hookup on the A/V, I am getting great vocals from the center and the players top menu says I am putting out 6 channel at 96kh which is what my Onk DAC are set at. Just not getting much from the surrounds and the players test tone should be there for the center and surround channel to match them up, have looked all through the manual and OSD and cannot find anywhere you would turn them on, just can set size, db, and ms. But no db test tone for center or surround:( . Well, will give them a call in the morning. I suppose I could just as well use the AV to raise the level of the surrounds and then just return to calibrated setting for HT.
I am using the optical for DVD/V are you saying I need to unhook this cable? This does not seem right? -
You shouldn't need to unhook the optical normally, but you might try it just to double check that the receiver is using the 5.1 inputs. I don't understand why it would be in pro logic mode.

Well, I feel like such a ^%&_)_*^%$%, I forgot to change the front switch audio selector on the ONK to Multi Channel. All is working well now. The disc Hotel California sounds great!!:)
Now I hope someone comes out with a 200-300 disc changer that will play every format.
