spirit airlines to charge for carry-on luggage

new york (marketwatch) -- closely-held spirit airlines said tuesday it would begin charging customers for carry-on luggage, the first airline to do so. The low-cost carrier said the new policy was the next step in de-bundling products and services traditionally included in the price of a ticket, helping it to further lower its airfare. For flights on or after august 1, spirit will charge passengers $45 for a carry-on bag, or $30 if they register the bag ahead of time either on line or on the phone. Members of the airline's $9 club fare will be charged $20. Spirit also raised its second check-bag fee to $45 from $25 when checked in at the airport. The first check-bag fee is held at $25.

really??!!
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

In this case, you will do the opposite of flying nekkid, you will put on multiple layers of clothing to avoid the carry on bag fee ;)

So now it makes sense to just Fedex/UPS my luggage to my destination. Of course when I arrive at the airport sans any baggage for my flight I get to qualify for the full body cavity search by the TSA workers! I'm thinking Greyhound and Amtrak should capitalize on this!

Southwest certainly has been capitalizing; they still let you check two bags for free.

Breaking News: US Air and United are in deep discussions to merge.

If this merger happened, then paying for carry-on bagages would become the norm. Unless you fly Singapore Airlines or Qantas or...any flights outside the US.

Jeez. Are they going to start charging if you a seat with a seat belt? How about having to put a quarter in a slot to use the bathroom on the plane?

Interesting you bought that up, because I had planned to note just this matter.

Unfortunately, yes, one airline has already put plans in place to have customers put quarters in a slot to use restroom. I heard it on the BBC last night in conjunction with the story on Spirit Airlines new checked bag fee. Its a discount British flyer that plans to refit their planes, taking two of the three bathrooms off a plane and charging for use fo the third, to make room for more seats. Granted, this is only for the express routes, but we all know how things start and then lead to others (just 4 years ago no charges for two checked bags and then within months of charging for a second one, they began charging for the first one).

Unbelievable. I fly a ton for work. This year, not so much, but typically 75k-100K miles per year. Over the past 10 years the industry has gone to hell. I'm a Delta Platinum member and get treated like crap. I can't imagine what it's like for the normal person who flies only a few times per year.

In a nutshell, flying on occasion sucks. Just got back into town today, and you do basically have to strip naked to get through security. Seriously, it was suit jacket off, shoes off, belt off, everything out of pockets, laptop out of bag and in separate bin, all for a 10 second run through a metal detector. You could also pay United a $39 fee to go through "premier security check"; whatever the hell that means...

When they start charging for carry ons for all flights is when I start driving everywhere. Its ludicrous as is...
