Is it just me or did the earthquake just tear the forums apart?

John how is quoting the Bible or even mentioning a book in the Bible religious discussion? It's no different than quoting any other author of any other book. I think you are reading between the lines of said rule.

If you want to go that far perhaps we should eliminate Happy Easter or Merry Christmas threads. How about this, in the Happy Easter thread, I said, "He is risen, Happy Easter All!" Is that religious discussion. I think not. I think WE ALL should relax and just follow the rules and not read into them. They are cut and dry, and very clear, the management did a great job of covering what they would allow and what they wouldn't. No need to expound on them.:)

So the fact that "nations have been rising against nations" since before Christians even believe the world existed is ignored? Ditto the existence of earthquakes and floods and famines and "troubles?"

Believe in God all you want, but I've seen fortune cookies with more specific criteria for being "correct."

Hey, just go about your business then. Have a good time. It's not my job to convince anyone of anything. I'm just trying to pass on some information. It's up to you to do something with that information; whether you"scoff" at it (as it seems you are doing) or you decide to find out more about it is all on you.

    Wow.

Earthquakes happen all the time folks. On a near constant basis.

On top of that the ENTIRE Pacific Plate is encompassed by the Ring of Fire in the Pacific. When you have a major earthquake, like the one in Chile, it has ripple effects around the Pacific. Earthquakes happen when built up pressure between tectonic plates or in under ground magma chambers is released. When that pressure in one small area is released, it changes tensions across the entire plate. This can cause other high-tension zones with other plates to lose enough friction to also slip and cause more earthquakes.

Remember in 2004, the earthquake that caused the tsunami in Indonesia? That registered 9.1 in magnitude. After that occurred, the same thing happened. Massive aftershocks as well as other earthquakes as far away as Peru for months afterwards. Everybody was saying the sky is falling and Satan was coming then too. We were also heavily embroiled in a losing prospect in Afghanistan at the time as well.

This is not new nor is it out of the ordinary. In fact, many scientists have been predicting a heightened level of activity for some time now. When we start having 9.8 magnitude Earthquakes in the middle of, say, Mississippi or Wisconsin or Manitoba and volcanoes in New Jersey or Long Island, then I'd start to worry. But Earthquakes and volcanoes in known earthquake in volcano zones is not a harbinger of the apocalypse. It's reality.

Lets get back to reality and contrast the damage from this quake to the one in Haiti. Lack of loss of life and property damage. A big part of this lay with the stronger building codes the USA and (believe it or not) Mexico has.

One of the persons killed in this quake was someone who rushed out of his building only to run into the front of an oncoming car. The building remained standing. Not to say, I wouldn't rush to get the hell out of a building in a major earthquake either....

It "helps" that California / Mexico have a lot of Earthquakes and are therefore prepared. It's not so much the building codes of the USA but of earthquake zones; if a large Earthquake hit Manhattan the whole city would be in shambles.

Haiti isn't in an area that gets a lot of earthquakes, so they weren't really prepared for hte damage. Plus, you know, poverty.

Haiti does too get earthquakes. It's an extinct volcano. Port au-Prince is built on the side of a ridge that was likely a volcanic slope at one point. The entire area is susceptible to being destabilized by earthquakes caused by either plate tectonics or volcanic activity or both. It also sits right on the edge of the Caribbean Plate with a major fault line that runs along the northern coast of the entire island of Hispaniola. It's a transform fault with the North American plate.

Am I the only one that paid attention in geography class in high school?
