As one or two of you may remember, my wife got laid off Jan 3rd...Happy New Year....Jerk.

Anyway, I took enough money out of the 401k to pay off all our credit cards, and we cut back a lot on our extra spending ( I take lunch instead of buying fast food every day, and not so much eating out). Along with that, we qualified to buy our house ten yrs ago on my income alone, and we don't have any car payments....We're doing pretty well. Not to mention, because my wife isn't putting up wit the BS anymore, she was able to drop her BP and hormone medicine, and that was 100 bucks a month.

We sat down and looked at our budget, and lo and behold, we're not struggling. So, I got the go ahead to pocket some cash every month.....And I can go back and buy some toys again!!!!!:D

I'm thinking I'm going to buy a firearm I a member here showed me, and then build another surround for our exercise room upstairs.

I'm a happy boy today.:D:D

It'll take a while, but at least I'm not banned from boy toys anymore.

    Good for you !!

But why is your wife a "jerk" for getting laid off? The company probably couldn't afford to retain her any longer?

Sounds like a plan but you better save a little to pay that 10% penalty to the IRS for early withdrawal.

No, my wife's boss was the jerk ( she was second in command until she trained her replacement that makes less). Actually, I lobbied hard for a few years for her to up and quit, but people get comfortable and dont want to change, and I understand, but my wife's health improvement speaks volumes.

I took out a 401K loan ( I didn't want to but to, but you do what you think you need to do). We're waaaaay money ahead even with the loan payment. She was forced to part time for the last few months of last year, and we're at what she was making part time, plus she's getting unemployment right now. All of this is figured on no job or unemployment.

I'm really glad we bought this house (2400 sq ft with a pool, why do we need bigger?), instead of qualifying on two incomes for a larger house. Also, we refied twice for interest rates, but I never pulled money out to buy toys.

My wife has bitched for the entire time we've been married about me being very Scottish, but she's pretty happy now.

Yeah funny how that works. When I went to see my MD last week my blood pressure was something like 117/66. It hasn't been that low in YEARS!:D

isn't it crazy how much stress work puts on people? I was going nuts when I first started my new job and was stress eating and sleeping and had so much tension in my body it wasn't even funny. I'm glad your wife and Cathy are doing better! Being on meds suck, and its always good for your body to take a break from them sometimes!

The tax on early withdrawal of 401k's is way more than 10%. More like in the 40's. Better save some of that cash becouse 16,000 new IRS agents will make you their wet dream. Glad to hear your makin' it though.

Good to hear you're doing well Bro and your wife's health has improved, I'll bet she's a lot happier which I'm SURE makes your life a lot easier.

Careful with your 401k. I made the mistake of using the several I had rolled over and lo and behold before I could replenish it, I became disable and have to live off of just Social Security Disability. We were doing okay with it until the economy took a dump and I got sick two years ago. Now we're strapped with this fixed income and nothing augment it.

bummer that your wife had her career interrupted but if it was affecting her health
that is too serious of a problem to continue with.

it is much better to have good health since we all know how much an illness can cost
    especially if prolonged.

she is lucky that a few "audio" toys keep you happy as it could be a lot more expensive
in other hobbies like racing, sailing, flying airplanes......

An interesting development has occured out her unemloyment though....

She has turned into a night owl, stays up considerably later than me, and likes to paint. While I'm asleep walls suddenly change colors, and IMHO not always for the better.

Put together a good safety fund, maybe 3 to 6 months of pay. This will make you worry free. I just did it and you wouldn't believe how good it makes you feel! Now I'm working on saving some dollars for a home cash fund.
    Congrats!

Congrats on being able to relax a little financially. Pay off high interest debt then start saving some of it. Doesn't mean you can't buy some toys, just don't go crazy.

Don't discount how much a stress-free life is worth. My wife is a stay-at-home mom and we wouldn't want it differently. She can take care of the kids and enjoy life. She has toyed with the idea of picking up a part-time job to make a few dollars. However, I know she would be stressed out with the extra responsibilities. So I tell her not to rush into anything, and she agrees.

You planning on doing shooting sports, hunting, or just home defense?

I may finally break down and do something on an AR platform.

Also, one of the living room walls changed colors last night. It's the damndest thing I've seen. I go to bed and it's one color, I wake up ,and it's changed.

I'm too old for the burgundy and velvet curtian room. :p

They changed to a beige/light brown color. I think I kinda like it.
