silly mod - add meters to an amp?

I've wanted an amp with level meters for a long time... unfortunately, can't afford anything to replace my GFA-545 right now.

Has anyone added meters to an amp? Or know where these meters get their readings from? do you have to put them in the signal path, or can they be parallel?

Maybe I'm just being silly, but then I've been enjoying a few Yuengs since I got home from work at 3 ;)
Ludicrous gibs!

My dad considered doing this a while back to his McIntosh 2100. We took a look at the schematic for a 2105 (same as 2100, but with output meters). We found a source for meters too. We never went through with it, and that's a while back now so I don't remember if we came up with a plan. I think we were going to fabricate a second box to hold them, rather then modify the amp itself. I'd say try to get your hands on a schematic for an amp with built-in meters, to get started. Sorry, that's all pretty vague. I think it would be a cool project though, definitely worth trying.

Awesome amp.....little on the high side perhaps.

I have seen this amp go for $150 on Craigslist before though.

AFAIK, the Adcoms didn't come with analog meters. At least not in the 5x5 series that I have.

I'm not unhappy with my amp, I just want some dancing meters to entertain my eyes while my speakers are entertaining my ears...

Your probably going to need a fabricated external box as mentioned above. I think modding the front of your adcom will be time consuming, but if you have the tools and the means to do then the payoff will definitely be kicka$$. Another option, sell the Adcom and go with something else.

Radio Shack sold add-on analog stereo power meters as an accessory back in the dim mists of time. These come up on certain popular on-line auction sites fairly regularly. They are just high-impedance voltmeters that shunt across the speaker outputs.

I didn't think so either. I just thought maybe schematics from other meter equipped amps might point your towards a location to make your connection. McIntosh, Carver, Marantz, Denon come to mind. I'm sure there are lots of others. Piggybacking the signal from the speaker binding posts sounds promising too. Now you've got me thinking... as if I didn't already have enough DIY project ideas

They only had analog MP3 players in those days.

    Would you consider
an additional component that will provide waveform control

I have a (for sale or trade)
    Audio Control
    Model Number C101 Series III
    Octave Equalizer
with RTA Real Time Audio Spectrum Analyzer

Also has a PINK NOISE generator built in

It has a LED display that you can adjust and monitor the input signal
that then will pass to the amplifier.

I get some pictures and specifications posted in the For Sale Flea Market section

    thanks.
