Sort of funny story: I've promised my 11 yo daughter a laptop and I've been in the market to find the right one for her. She uses it mainly for (occasional) home work, or mainly Farmville (FB). So, when the iPad launched yesterday, I asked her if she'd be interested, her answer is a definite NOOOOOO! I said why not? "No Keyboard!"...

(or perhaps she knows that I want a new toy) :p

Oh, and in case no one mentioned it yet...Farmville is a FLASH game, and the iCrap...er Pad, doesn't support Flash.

Unless they have an iPod-friendly version of it somewhere.

it just looks like it was designed to break about 10 minutes into ownership.
Yeah, so much better than a textbook. How about I just use my nasty old
notebook for that? Or wouldn't that be trendy enough? I think Steve Jobs'
string of success has ended with this one. Useless. Move on.

One thing about apple is that there products are very solid and sturdy. I highly doubt this will break in 10 minutes. Like my old mac that lasted 6 years and with 3 drops in that time.

Your old Mac wasn't a giant sheet of glass either.

You'd think that Mac would've addressed that problem with some polycarbonite/plexiglass or whatever. I've seen WAY too many iphones that have been dropped and cracked. Yeah, they still work but they look like $hit and continue to crack...you know, like a windshield that starts to crack.

I see a LOT of naysayers here. The same that said the iPhone wouldn't fly. Let me ask one question, have you TRIED it? Try it. then try some of the other products you are saying is better and you will see that some of the comments made on this thread are just silly.

What's so silly about the comments? Its too large. The I-phone and it's clones are better than just a cell phone or just a PDA. How it that better at $500 than a laptop? Oh yeah, no keyboard. That's really handy. And it will fit into the pocket of my clown pants, won't it? I can't use it in place of my
laptop on a business trip, it doesn't look to be very handy in the car or out by the pool. But I guess if Kindles are selling, why not.

    Have you tried cat ****?

I have not tried cat ****, but I can guarantee you that I don't like it.

This notion that you have to try something before you know if you like it or not is dumb. I can look at the specs, see what it is, list all thee features that it DOESN"T have, and know without trying it that it won't meet my needs and I won't like it - that's the beauty of a little thing called research, you don't just have to go out and buy everything to decide if you want one.

I really like my iPhone, but I'm not purchasing another mobile or PC product that won't support Flash.

Defending a PRODUCT is far more silly. It's a product. Designed by a huge corporation. Your buddy didn't invent it, Apple will make a billion friggin' dollars off of it. The idea that people treat Apple with kid gloves is LUDICROUS.

The whole "try it" thing is silly. It's a shiny new gadget, with a LOT of flash and "wow" factor. Trying it for an hour is LESS informative than reading the specs and making an informed decision. No one can pick up something like that and not be wowed by it for a while, ti's the nature of shiny new gadgets, which is why all these "first impression" reviews this week are meaningless. But knowing the features it lacks lets me know that even though I may love it when I first play with it, as a platform, once the novelty wears off, it'll just be anohter very expensive toy with very limited functionality.

Look at it this way : if you bought a new sports car as your main form of transportation, and it was FAST and looked cool, you'd love it when you first drove it. Then after a week, you'd realize the suspension was rough, and commuting in it was starting to hurt your back. You'd realize one hot summer day that it didn't have A/C - it's a sports car, why should it? Oh, and no radio. You might never get tired of driving fast, but once the novelty wore off you'd realize you were stuck with something that doesn't fit your needs, even if it's flashy and cool.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

If I had a nickel for every time we told someone to try something...Just give it 10min of your time. Cat ****, not called for...If I riled feathers with silly, I'm sorry. I have just watched people dog products without giving them a shot. Like hi-fi, those articles we read where people say we are wasting our time and have never stepped foot into a hi-fi shop but see a 100wpc amp that cost 10X's the price of a Sony at Best Buy. What they don't get is that the whole is more than the sum of it's parts. And yes that does apply to this argument.

My Blackberry spec wise is far superior to your iPhone. There are MANY things it does (on paper) that your iPhone does not. However, in practice I affectionately call it the worst best phone I have ever had. I wish I had put my hands on the iPhone BEFORE I re-upped with verizone and got this POS. So, give it 10min.

    I don't need 10 minutes. I don't need a new $500 toy.
Once again, I've got a laptop, and I don't have a "smart" phone.
    I don't twitter, tweeet, text, or facebook. I 'm not a 16 girl or
    a gamer. I don't watch 100 u tube videos a day. I spend too much
time checking up on work stuff now in my off time. I'm over 50 and
can't think of a single reason to have one.

I do not like them anywhere.

I do not like them, Sam I am.

The only thing I would use it for is reading. Probably catching up on the forums, etc but not much other reason. I like toys and have been debating on the purchase for a few weeks. As of now I am holding out.

I want to get one, paired with a a creston controller, there are several apps that allow the ipad (like the iphone or ipod touch) can be the slickest remote control out there. Add to it the screen size, I can remotely monitor cameras, or take it in the kitchen as an incredibly useful receipe book. Its a Kindle with more features.

As someone said before, it is a content user, like a netbook. Totally worthless for any thing above the lightest of usage, but fine for simple interaction with content.

I would love too..........but fishing season has opened and some things are more important..BUT if you wanna send me one to sample for a few weeks I would be more than happy to "give it a try" getting my read on while waiting for the fish to bite, might help pass the time quicker... otherwise the $$$ = walleye/northern bait :)

lol yeah...flash will never come to the iFamily (not counting desktops).

I played with an iPad for a while...it's definitely a pretty product.
That's about all it's got going for it IMO.

I'm eagerly waiting for HP/Palm's WebOS tablets and phones. Should find out all about them on Feb. 9th.
