Are these worth fixing and re-cone?

Greetings, I have a MW6500, that was in a Monitor 5. Upon arrival the magnet had separated from the basket. Is there re-cone kits for these? Is it worth ripping out the cone, re-assembling the magnet to the basket and then re-coning this? I understand that there are MW6502 available, I just hate to "throw" this away. Seems to be a waste. What ya'll think? Thanks for the replies.

    I've never heard of anyone being able to successfully re-align a magnet on the vintage Polk mid-woofers. The magnets falling off is a somewhat common problem unfortunately. Many people attach the magnets to the spiders with some JB Weld(which I plan on doing myself eventually).

    So...to put it bluntly, you've got a really sweet Polk Audio paper weight/refrigerator magnet now.



    Also, no, there isn't a recone kit available for these. That driver wouldn't need to be reconed anyway...it would just need to have the magnet re-aligned. However, as I mentioned above...I don't think that's ever even been done successfully.


    Polk has MW's available direct. You can also check around on ebay, or in the flea market area here. The new replacements are slightly different looking...so if you want to retain the original factory look, you might want to try and find a used one.

    How does a magnet fall off a speaker? I have speakers..that are anywhere from 20-30 years old and have NEVER seen this happen. AM I missing something here?

    Apparently the magnets on the old MW woofers were simply glued, not bolted or riveted (not sure, thats what I read with quick research today cuz I brought home some M10's to find 3 of the 4 woofers were frozen). So it was easy for them to shift or come off completely. I don't know why they did this considering the class of speaker, but we're paying for it now.

    They were only glued on. Over time, the glue dries up, and can start cracking.

    If the speakers are just sitting in your living room and never get moved...it is VERY unlikely that your magnets are going to fall off. However, if you're moving them and drop them...or if they're being shipped and get jarred a little too much, the shock can knock the magnets off.

    A lot of speakers used bolts or rivets to permanently attach the magnets. I'm not sure why Polk didn't...possibly just a cost cutting measure.

    As I mentioned above...if you're moving or shipping vintage Polk's, it's always a good idea to JB weld the magnets to the spiders.
