went into bestbuy this past weekend and they had the samsung 3d tv set up with the glasses so i gave it a try. it was pretty cool actually the only bad things are those glasses and to make matters worst i already wear glasses. picture it wearing two pairs of glasses at the same time. no thanks. any ways just wondering if any one plans on making the jump into the 3d tech.

    I'm holding out for 4D Smell-a-vision.

I don't think I'll ever get into this technology. I just don't see myself sitting at home wearing 3D glasses when I'm watching TV.

I've found one major flaw here.

I'm a single guy...I'm 23...from time to time, I'll have a lady friend over to watch a movie.;) For some reason, I just have a feeling that wearing 3D glasses would somewhat diminish the type of mood that people generally strive for in those types of situations...lol

On that some note...I think this is going a step closer to taking away the "family" aspect of watching a movie/TV. Instead of talking to each other, now everyone is in their own world with their 3D glasses, and ignoring each other. A lot can be said by simply making direct eye contact with someone.

At the moment, 3D feels like a jack in the box jumping out at me. Feels a bit contrived and I hate the glasses but I'm willing to wait until the dust settles or Barbwire 3D on BR.

Watch what you say! I said the same thing about moving to a flat panel versus a tube set. I'm personally waiting till they come out with holographic type technology where you don't need glass or even a TV, just a projector type of mechanism. Remember Total Recall with the holographic chick paying tennis? Nice. :)

I'm running a projector on a 100" screen, so until 3D via projection takes hold and there is actual content, no thanks. Personally, I think it'll go pretty much the way every other 3D technology has in the past... but that's just me.

I would consider it in 2-3 years when it's not so expensive. Paying $150 for glasses for each person is a bit expensive.
Trying to get little kids to keep glasses on the whole time might annoy them and they'll take them off or break them.
Also, my father in law is blind in one eye, so 3D doesn't work for him, hehe.

I design 4d (3d vision with surround sound, smells and warm/cool/moving air) theaters into museums now on a regular basis and as an experience it is great - but for the home it is not appropriate; no one would ever leave their couch to experience anything real. I think the biggest beneficiary of this would be advertisers which are already way too invasive and persuasive. For this reason; I think it is probably inevitable that it will become the new standard.

At that point, maybe I will embrace the next step - a holodeck. May as well go all in.

I just thought of a question.

If you're watching a 3D movie without 3D glasses on, what's it going to look like? Will it just look like a normal 2D film, or will it look all crazy without the glasses on?

Interesting results in the poll so far...

    2 for yes
    36 for no
    23 for maybe

It'll be interesting to see if 3D takes off over the next few years. I have my doubts though.

I won't do it until they make 3dtvs that work without glasses, which is possible (there are a few small companies that have already done it) just not as intense. I agree that my 2 year old wont wear the glasses, and I also already wear glasses. But who knows, in 2 or 3 years I may well eat my words...

You do know that you don't have to watch everything with the glasses on, right? These TVs are just the same as a 2d set except that they have high refresh rates for flashing the alternate left eye, right eye pictures on the screen that the glasses block alternately for each eye. Just put the glasses away to hide your inner geek and load up the chick flick that probably isn't in 3d anyways.

That said, I'll probably wait until the dust settles and this is just another standard feature on all hardware like lossless decoding or bitstreaming. Like everything else with home theater, available content (broadcast and blu-ray) will make this viable or not. It's kind of ironic that the only full length feature right now appears to be the monsters vs aliens disk exclusive to samsung hardware. So panasonic purchasers are just looping their 3d demo disk...the sellout at Best Buy was driven by early adopters futureproofing themselves, I guess.
