Put an amp on your 12's, or maybe the tweeters are out on your 12's.
    Welcome to club Polk.

I really enjoy my Rotel DClass amps with my RTi12's. This includes the 1085 or the 1091's. Also, how small is your room? What is placement in the room like? 12's need a lot of room to breathe when you get them moving. If I remember right I have heard RTi8's are bright so it might be what you are used to listening to.

I really like the parasound amps, rotel, outlaw (for budget), and a few others. The pro series amps are supposed to be nice but I haven't had a listen.

If you want more bang for the buck try the used market.

    Thanks for the reply mstang,
It is not the brightness or highs they just seem to be lagging mid range.Just not as crisp as my 8's.My room is 18 by 26 with the speaker placement 10 feet in front of my seating position.I will look into the rotels,it seems to be a favorite among club polk.I really appreciate the help.

You need an amp to get those big boys to sing. 200wpc should suffice. I run a IceAmp on my 12s @ 525wpc, and have excellent results.

Keep in mind 1watt will get you around 90 db's on these speakers. yes, more power may get you more control but the quality watts are what matters more then the amount of watts.

It's all about that quality first watt for the average user. Also, I really noticed mine opened up and sounded so much more natural when I upgraded from my HTR-5760 to my RSP-1068.

I have read where a lot of people said their 8s sounded better than there 12's...that is...until they fed them hungry 12s some power. That is most assuredly your problem. I have my RTi A7s powered with an XPA-3 (200w per channel) and they scream like a raped ape...no joke. My Pioneer goes from -80 to +12 and at -10 its like being in the front row of an AC/DC or Metallica concert. Insane, with no distortion whatsoever. Was playing the song "One" by Metallica yesterday and with the PC12-NSD, when that drum solo toward the end kicked in, it was unbelievable. Give them some juice and step the hell back. The 8s sound better because it doesn't require as much power to bring them to life. Good luck.

I went from 10's to 12's and did not notice a whole lot of improvement even with my yamaha at 130w/ch. Then I hooked them up to a Carver TFM35x which is 250 watts/ch.Made a big differance! I have read numerous posts from differant forums and these speakers want to sing but they need the power for them to shine. And they were right. I cross these over at 60hz and let my two mirage subs handle the low end.
Get a good power amp.I recommend Carver myself since I feel this will tame down the brighness of the 12's. Adcom are good, just do not know how they will sound with the 12's. Have not tried Rotel but here great things about them. Remember, you want to find a amp that complements these speakers.
    Get quality speaker cables!
Then get a quality interconnects between the amp and your Onkyo.
Every upgrae made a improvement in my sound!
I can tell you that this journey has made my RTi12's shine with greater midrange and highs! I am extremely happy with them.Just a suggestion. Good luck!
