ok.. everyone look into your crystal balls :p and try and predict what kind of influence 3D video wil have on consumers. taking both TV displays and blu ray 3D players.

1. will it hit like a firestorm and everyone will be buying them this holiday?

2. will it just be a videophile type format?

3.will it die like HD DVD ?

my prediction is that it will be a videophile only format. and will not have that big of an impact overall on consumers. kind of like SACD and DVD-Audio. there but not a threat to CD's and other forms of music listening.

there i've said it....

I think it will definitely be bigger than SACD and DVD-A, which are really dying formats.
Probably general public will not buy in, like you said, but quite a few people would.
I will be buying a new TV in 1 or 2 years for sure. My plasma is around 7 years old now. I am very excited about all these current and new technologies available (kuro, which is now in 2010 panasonics, LED-backlight, 3D, OLED, etc.)

My guess is in 3 years it will sell well but right now it's to expensive and people are not going to run out and get all new equipment just to watch the little 3D that is out there.

Way to soon right now. Just not enough content. Also no-one knows what type of pricing we are looking at for 3D BD's. If they are $40 or higher I think this will fail.

When my in-laws talk about how amazing a 3d movie is, i think its going to be big.

I also think that it is going to be an amazing change for video games, going well beyond what is out there now and getting in immersive games, especially with motion controlled games on the PS3/Xbox coming out. The PS3 is already 3d compatible. That gives 3D a large installed base that just has to upgrade the TV (sucks that my 120hz 55inch lcd is not going to work b/c the input is at 60hz or some crap like that).

The current 3D TVs supports resolution of 1080p. As soon as you bought a new 3D BDP, a new HDMI 1.4 AVR, and a new 3D TV, here comes the 2160p resolution! And then what? Re-released 2160p 3D Bluray movies... blah blah blah... :( So forget about it, I won't be upgrading to 3D for a long long while

I'm willing to bet many people will take the same approach as me. I plan to wait and see how it all pans out and then make a decision based on price, availability of media and compatibility with what I already own. There will always be those who buy the newest and "best" technology. Right now I think having to wear the glasses would be annoying.

I so agree with you, not to mention 3D glasses over glasses would be a PITA

There's a 3D out for commercial purposes that doesn't require glasses. It is, however, uber costly. :(

Can't think of the technology offhand, but Electronics Design magazine talks about 3D in this month's issue. The technology for glassless 3D may be expensive now, but remember back in the day when computer CPU speeds were projected to be limited to 100 Mhz due to the expense of manufacturing ?

    I have hope. :)

i have said this before and I will say it again. 3D will never take off until the glasses are not required. There is no way i will be wearing thsoe glasses in my own house.

3d is going to be big. This summer many new products will hit the market and come the holiday season there will be more with price reductions. The release of Avatar on BR 3d will give it a big push in November, there are already 4 million 3d TV's (Samsung & Mitsubishi DLP) in American homes with an expected sale of 4 million more for 2010 and by 2015 3d TV's will be the majority. ESPN and Discovery will be launching 3d channels this year with many more to follow.

My thoughts also. I mean really, how many friggin' times are you going to replace your video library? On top of that, they allready have some 4k resolution chips and are just waiting. So it's not that the technology isn't allready available, they have to sell you a bunch of stuff then spring out the next higher resolution to start the cycle all over again. I believe they vastly over shot what the consumer is willing to spend.

4k resolution chips have been around for a few years now. There are projectors in the prosumer market that support 4k+ resolution. They just upconvert the incoming 1080p signal.
