Speaker static

I have very limited knowledge regarding home audio equipment and wiring. I recently purchased a slightly used Sony STR-DG710 6.1 Multi channel AV receiver. I only plan to use this receiver to power 2 small outdoor speakers. I purchased 2 200 watt outdoor 3 way speakers. I have only installed 1 speaker so far. I ran 14-2 wire about 6 ft. and connected to the receiver in the speaker A port (front speaker A/B). I double checked to be sure that both ends were wired correctly with good connections and turned it on to the speaker A setting in the FM tuner mode on a radio station I know is available. All I can hear is static/snow/fuzz through the speaker with no music at all. I noticed that there was a coaxial connection on the receiver for an FM antenna and I don't have one hooked up. Would that cause this static problem. I would anticipate some static with no antenna but I can't hear anything but static. Please help.
