Monitor 10's?

Found these on CL local to me, just curious if they were Monitor 10's. Says in the ad that a few of the cones are pushed in, are they worth the $100 he is asking for them? I have only heard a pair of Monitor 5's as far as Vintage Monitors go, how would these compare to those? Trying to get some Vintage Polks in my setup, should I get these or wait for something better? Thanks for the help guys.

Yes, monitor 10's with Peerless tweeters (or at least that's what they look like in that crappy picture). Well worth the $100 if the pushed dustcaps is all they have (really does not affect the sound).

Thanks for the quick reply Ricardo, the pics are pretty crappy. I may have to go take a look at these in the morning after work. Also, would these be a good candidate for a starter 2 ch. rig?

Thanks George, I am taking it slow with the whole 2 ch thing since I am very new to the idea. I have been keeping my eyes open for a good set of Vintage Polks for a 2 ch rig that wouldn't break the bank. As for the rest of the mods/tubes, that would have to be done over time. I was gonna try out my TSi 500's as a 2 ch rig, but they have been assigned as surrounds, and I like them there very much. Maybe I'll sell my Monitor 40's to offset the cost of the 10's. Thanks again for the quick replies guys.

If they are at all close, check them out. I got a set of monitor 7s from Ricardo 2 months ago. I thought I would sell them when I got my 2Bs going...I am now trying to figure out how to keep them! ...I enjoy them that much...

I have been waiting since the end of February to see which way you went. Congratulations on being patient!

LOL, yeah I have been taking it slow with the 2 ch thing and have been doing a lot of research and prowling on CL. I think that the 10's are a good place for me to start and I am probably going to go check them out in the next couple of days. I'll keep ya posted.

    UPDATE!!

Went to check them out today and they looked pretty good. A few of the dust caps were pushed in on the drivers and they were a bit dirty, so I asked him if he would take $75 (asking price was $100) he said ok, he just wanted them sold. More importantly, they sounded great!! I went out to my truck to get a CD that had a little more oompf since to make sure the bass radiators sounded good, since Tom Petty wasn't pushing them much, lol. I came back and right away noticed something was wrong. He was looking with great concern at his Sansui amp he was using to power them (that thing was a beast btw) he switched wires and the problem didn't follow. Not knowing much about the Vintage Polks, I asked him about the fuse and he told me that they were for the drivers and radiator and that the tweeter must have blown. Feeling bad he said he would take $25 off the price (bringing it to $50) and I said ok. I gave him the money, and he helped me load them in my truck. I called Russ (lightman1) and told him about my purchase and explained the problem. Knowing that I am a dumba$$ when it comes to Vintage Polks he explained to me that the fuse was for the tweeters, not the drivers, and that there was a chance it had blown. He congradulated me on my "score" and I went to NAPA and had them check the fuse with an Ohm meter eventhough it looked blown to me. They confirmed it was bad and I bought a pack of 5 1 Amp fuses (didn't have any 3/4 Amp, but I will get them soon) for less than $2.00. I got them home, cleaned them up, wired them up, changed the fuse and powered them up. The new fuse did the trick and they sound 100% again (thanks Russ!!) All told I spent about $52 on a set of amazing sounding Polk Audio Monitor 10A's!! They are my first set of Vintage Polk's and man am I glad I got them. I am gonna try to attach some pics. later when I get a chance, just wanted to share my story. All in all it was a pretty good Sunday. Got them playing as I type away on my PS3 and they sound great, so begins the journey down the rabbit hole, lol.

Hey Jeff, what a great score for $50! Now it's time to start tinkering with them. Do they pass the "press test"? Gently push the passive bass radiator in and hold it; notice that the midwoofers are pushed out and then slowly return to position. If this takes less than 5 seconds, then check out Darque Knight's post about Mortite here: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74524&highlight=mortite

After you have had them for a while you might want to think about rebuilding the crossovers.

I bought mine in 1986 and still have them. If it weren''t for the 1C's sitting in the living room I would still be listening to them. I think that should be a pretty good recommendation.
In fact I think it is time to drag them out and feed them some current.
    Enjoy them.

Peerless 10s, for 52 dollars..not bad for your first foray into the 2 channel mode. Next you should consider a nice integrated amp (cheap--used) to power them--cheapest way to go! Or you could take longer and do separates?

About a year ago I sent (at my own cost) an old Yamaha AVR I had to one of our members for free so HE WOULD NOT PART WITH HIS MONITOR 10s....he was thinking of giving up his 10s due to lack of money and the fact that his kids wanted to do the surround sound thing. As far as I know he's still rocking to his 10s and now has the ability to build a surround system around the 10s. So everyone is happy and a forced 'sale' did not occur.

    Nice stuff Jeff!

Thanks for the congrats guys, I didn't know what I had found until I listened to them, man these things are awesome. Yeah Curt, they have the peerless tweets, Ricardo was right. I am looking into getting an amp even more than before, just taking it slow because funds are limited, and the wife doesn't even know I got them (long story, lol) With only $52 into them so far, I think I did pretty good, and the comments from the guys in the know confirm that. With a cheap old Sony AVR I have them hooked up to and my PS3 as the source, they still sound great, not as good as they did at the guys house with the Sansui, but still very good. I took some pics. with my cell phone, but I can't upload them from work with the firewalls and the USB's being disabled. I am still giddy, lol and I wanna thank you guys for talking so highly of Polk's Vintage speakers, now I know why.

Found a workaround for getting the pics. on here. As you can kinda see in the third pic. the dust caps are pushed in on the drivers, but they still sound nice. I may try to get them pulled out, but for now I'm just enjoying them.

They look in pretty good shape. I don't think you'll have any trouble pulling out the dust caps either!

Cool! For some reason I can't see your thumbnails but the pics load fine!

Personally, I'd like to pick up some smaller Monitor 7s with peerless tweeters for a smaller office application! But I bet the 10s can put out some nice BASS.

Hmmm, that's weird C, I can see the thumbs and the firewalls here at work usually block them. Yeah, they are in pretty good shape, eventhough the cell phone didn't do them justice, lol. Those 10's hit pretty hard, but I didn't turn them up much with the old Sony AVR because I was afraid to clip them, don't know the power rating on it, but it isn't much. Gotta take care of my investment, lol.

It's probably just the Chinese filters on my side....lol! They've popped a cork since google relocated its service to Hong Kong. Forcing the Chinese to do their own censor/filtering. We'll see how long 'that' lasts!
