Hdmi 1.4

HDMI 1.4, here it comes. From what I read:

  1. It will be the standard 19-pin connector, though there are also a new "Type-D" micro connector for portable devices and a new "Type-E" locking connector for vehicles.

  2. New HDMI 1.4 devices will be backward compatible with all current HDMI 1.3 cables and devices.

  3. Interesting part: HDMI 1.4 will introduce a new HDMI Ethernet channel. That means: if you connect an ethernet cable to the back of your TV, then your TV can become a hub/router, routing internet connection to any device that connects to your TV via a HDMI 1.4 cable.

  4. Not so interesting part: there will also be an Audio Return Channel to allow your TV and AVR to transmit audio two ways: upstream and downstream. Not much of any use for me here.

  5. There is a LipSync function to compensate for processor delays. Really? Will it really help AV fans who have been struggling with the LipSync issue of their particular setup?

  6. 4K x 2K resolution, which means resolutions of 3840x2160 and 4096x2160. Oh? Probably no help unless I use a 200" screen :D

  7. 3D Support: somehow Monoprice claimed that:
Fact is, most of the HDMI 1.3 cables Monoprice currently sells will already support many of these new features like 3D over HDMI, 4K x 2K and additional color spaces. However, we will soon be carrying newer cables that will be certified to support the other features which promise to raise the bar in terms of performance while maintaining the unmatched value that Monoprice has always delivered. And as always, we'll stand behind our cables with a lifetime warranty.
I really hope their statement is true because I ran a long Monoprice HDMI 1.3 cable in-wall just about 6 months ago :( I don't want to have to cut open the sheet rock again

    I love the 4k 2k rez

So many movies are now being filmed by the new $20000 RED cameras that have native 2k 4k rez . These cameras wipe the floor with the $250000 cameras that have been used on movies like crank high voltage etc

I cant wait for 3D so I will hold of on a new avr etc until 1.4 hdmi hits the shelf

As long as your HDMI can pass a a minimum of 6.75gbs, you can handle the 3D play back, category 2 I believe? At least thats what I've come across.

There's a lot of misleading info out there about the 3D stuff, and the compatibility with HDMI 1.4, anyone have an official document from the blu-ray/HDMI committee?

I also read on a forum that when a guy set up the BB display 3-d equipment, they couldn't get both HD audio and the 3-d signal to pass through the receivers. So they needed toslink to the receiver and hdmi to the TV with the samsung blu-ray player. So no HD audio. The panasonic blu-ray player had two hdmi outputs, one to the receiver and one to the TV. They didn't list equipment, but there does seem to be a bottleneck somewhere with both HD audio and 3-d video with whatever equipment the guy was using for the BB display. Maybe hdmi 1.4 from end to end solves this?

Even when hdmi 1.1.1.2,1.3, came out, people were saying it didn't matter. I was not convinced and even today you still find handshake issues between gear. Hdmi1.4, I expect to have the same issues that will aggravate most into buying all new gear to enjoy 3-d stuff. Lets face it, from the manufacturers point of view, they don't want to sell you something that you can hold onto for 10 years.

Although when I upgrade, I get equipment with the highest current hdmi level, hdmi 1.1 features still work fine for me, and I get stellar blu-ray video and lossless audio. I imagine I'll eventually reach another plateau where all my equipment is able to do hdmi 1.3 or 1.4, but I'm in no hurry. IMO, there's no need to worry about all this stuff unless you're an early adopter and want to get into 3-d now.

Yeah the current run of the mill AVRs that full support 1.3 won't pass lossless over the 1.4 3D signal. Its a total crap shoot, specially for those looking for receivers right now that don't care about 1.4, a lot of stores are getting rid of most of the models.

From what I hear the "new" line of receivers are supposed to start hitting Best Buy in May, but no word on what models or if they have improved anything...

I work at a BBY, been meaning to find the most bo-jank HDMI cable I can find and feed the 3D signal through it, just haven't had a chance. Will let you guys know when I do. Anyone know what is 'supposed' to happen (or I guess Not happen..)? Just no video at all? Or will it just look like hell..

But if you are using a 50" screen, you probably won't see any difference betweek 1080p and 2160p, don't you think?

You would totally notice with how natural it would seem especially with replication of real sunlight etc . There would also be a tremendous boost in contrast

I was just checking amazon and theres already pre orders being taken for 1.4 receivers from onkyo with the 608 and pioneer too

1.3 can totaly be used for audio and 1.4 going to the display . panasonic has a 3D bdp with the dual 1.3 audio 1.4 display so there isnt a need for a 1.4 receiver just yet

Is the HDMI ports on my Pio Elite Kuro Pro-151fd plasma 1.3 or 1.4? Or is that only for wires? Will a 1.4 HDMI wire send through all the latest features to my tv?

Your TV got HDMI 1.3. I don't think it will work as a 3D TV.

Like Polkfarmboy mentioned above, the new Panasonic 3D Bluray players got 2 HDMI-out ports: one for HDMI 1.3 and the other for HDMI 1.4. That means we don't need to upgrade the AVR; we only have to connect an HDMI 1.3 cable from its HDMI 1.3 port to the current AVR (for lossless sound) and an HDMI 1.4 cable from its HDM 1.4 port to a 3D TV (for 3D video). This option does seem to help save some money. However, a 3D BDP and a 3D TV are the requirement.

I just got everything the way I want it. Going to be difficult to get congress(a.k.a wife) to approve HDMI 1.4, even if the difference is staggering.
