Hey,

I just hooked up my RTi8 and CSi5 to the Onkyo TX-SR805, but I am having to crank the volume on the receiver up REALLY high to get audible output from the speakers. This is really aggravating because right now my HTIB sounds better then this set up. I do not have any surrounds hooked up currently. Just the RTi8's, CSi5, and PSW505. Im not all that familiar with the receiver, however I also noticing in set-up it only offers me the options of 4Ohm and 6Ohm speaker Impedance, where I know Polks are 8 Ohm Impendance. I don't know what to do!!!! Help me.

by really high, I mean the receiver reads -20dB, and it only goes up to +6dB. it starts at -80 dB I think.WHATS WRONG?

Set the impedance selector for 6 ohms.

Have you run Audyssey or calibrated any individual speaker levels yet? If not, try that and report back.

What are you using as a source?(turntable, CD player etc.)

Definitely run the calibration. Also set all the speakers to small. You should notice a significant improvement from the HTIB you had before. Let us know how it goes.

For the record...there isn't a "small" setting in the Onkyo AVR's. They're either set for "full range", or at your choice of any of the available crossover frequencies(which are the equivalent of being set to small). Just thought I'd mention it to avoid any confusion in regards to wording.

I agree though. A good starting point would be an 80 hz crossover for the RTi8's and CSi5, with a 120hz crossover point for the sub.

So at -20 is it barely audible, or is that about the loudness you want to listen at? 'Cause if that is an OK listening level, I'd say nothing is wrong. 0dB is "reference" level, which is somewhere around 80 dB sound pressure (hence why it starts at -80), which is really quite loud.

I have to go to bed right now, I will do it tomorrow and report back. Additionally, one of my RTi8 grills was cracked in the box, does Polk cover this?

Additionally, there is a knob on the back of the subwoofer for crossover, what should that be set to? I was unsure.

Crank that up to the highest level, and let the AVR control the crossover points.

Good luck...as others have said check the Audyssey system but also run the manual test tones and check the db levels for each of those speakers and make sure they are not set to something like -12db because that will cause problems of the kind your descibe...at least 0 all the speaker levels and then listen and
    adjust!

At +20 my M70s (which are very similar in efficiency to your Rtis) sound plenty loud on my 805!

Was the volume on the TV turned way down? Depending on how it's setup...the audio output of the TV might not be a fixed level...and could be affected by what the volume is set to.

    Hi again,

At the bottom of the thread page there is a button...click it and go to Forum (main page) there you will find different sections....maybe you should click on 'electronics' or HT....when you get to that forum you will find a button on the upper page that has as an option START A NEW THREAD!

Please use that option instead of posting randomly in other people's thread and you'll be surprised how quickly and expertly you'll get your answer!

I had the audio setup to "external speakers" so the TV master volume was not even available.

I am going to bed now, but I am just used to my old Onkyo 303 receiver with my Infinity speakers where all I have to do is turn it up to 15 from (no sound) at 0 and it fills the room. It just seems weird to me that I have to crank up the volume so high to hear something. I will try those things tomorrow, good night to you all and thanks. Talk to ya tomorrow.

Okay so I just ran audyssey and then check everything. I have the fronts and Center at 80 Hz. It still doesn't sound very good. I am having to crank the receiver up to -20dB to be able to even hear TV. A onkyo 805 should have more than enough power for RTi8's and CSi5 right?

Get an spl meter. Then check your volume levels a speaker at a time. Use an Avia disc to play test tones, and calibrate that way. That's how you'll get the best idea of how loud you are playing, and at exactly what volume level on your receiver you get the specific volume to your ears.

The 805 is more than adequate to power the RTi8's/CSi5. I used to power that same speaker set with a 606, and it sounded great.

Can you describe how everything's connected?

What levels did Audyssey set for the speakers?

Try playing a CD through it, and see how that sounds.

Something doesn't sound right with this. -20 should be pretty loud!!

Grab your old reciever and hook it up to the A5's. Then check your center. Check all of connections.

How do you have your sound hooked up? Are you running an hdmi for audio and video from your sat/cable box or are you using optical? Something doesn't sound right at all. Those RTi8's should zing hardcore.

The thing I was confused about was this: On the receiver the colored terminal is for Positive, but in the Polk manual it says the Positive is the black.

I have it hooked up with Monster XP cable. Im not sure what gauge that is, but it appears to be 16 or higher. I have my TV hooked up to my receiver with Digital Optical audio cable. I have infinity surrounds at the moment until I my FXi A6's get here. I have the sound up very loud, so much so that the subwoofer (PSW505) using a Monster THX LFE overpowers the speakers at the audible levels. What output reading should I "normally" be able to watch TV at? in the -dB rating? At -17dB I can watch TV and hear it, but its not very loud and especially on commercials the subwoofer is booming.

Okay, so I hooked up my old infinity satellite speakers with the 805 and those speakers make almost no sound at -20dB on the 805. So I know think it is something with the receiver itself. I will hook up my Polk's to the SR303 and see what happens, be right back.
