I know there is a deals of the day thread, but I figured with the demand for these speakers being so high I'd start a thread for them here as well. Newegg has the Cherry Monitor 70's on sale for $169.99 w/ free shipping. Promo code EMCYPZW34. Also, on a side note, the Cherry CS1 is on sale for $67.99 w/ free shipping. Promo code EMCYPZW35. I know the Cherry ones aren't as sought after as the Black ones, but still one hell of a deal.

New to these forums, but I just used this promo.
I'm hoping to eventually have a decent audio system for HT/music/games, but I am a college student. I have a Kenwood KR-A4070 that my grandmother gave me, which is supposedly 80 watts/side stereo, and I found a PSW10 in nearly perfect condition hanging out at Goodwill for $30. I know the PSW10 isn't going to hold up to the Monitor 70's I have on the way, but it is sounding pretty good with my cheapo Aiwa bookshelf speakers my dad gave me.
What do you guys think? Will the monitor 70's be okay with my Kenwood or do I REALLY need to upgrade my receiver too? How about the PSW10? Totally worthless to even hang on to or worth holding until I can afford a 505 or something? -
Welcome to Club Polk! Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

Thanks, I will try it out. I didn't really want to spend the time making the wires and moving the room around if there was just no hope for the little guy, but it DOES add another amplifier to bass frequencies which is always a good thing. I should have the monitor 70's by Tuesday, so we'll see.
I did about 20 hours of research and a lot of internet shopping before deciding on the monitor 70's, which is actually less time than I'd usually spend, but these Aiwa's are really starting to get to me and I'd already decided to use some tax return money for speakers.
One thing I know very little about is my receiver. There's very little documentation on it and I don't think Kenwood makes HT stuff anymore. My grandmother bought it like 10 years ago and I remember it being pretty expensive. It has always sounded pretty good, but then I haven't had any chance to AB it with anything else. -
If you don't have and want a copy of the manual for you receiver, you can get one here:
http://www.retrevo.com/search/v2/jsp/mytrevo/myTrevo.jsp?page=man
You don't actually have to enter an email address, just the numbers in the bottom box. From looking at the manual, you're more likely to get around 60-70 watts RMS per channel without significant distortion. Someone who knows Monitor 70's can probably tell you if that would be adequate. -
The Monitors are a very efficent speaker an will operate just fine with that AVR. I have Monitor 70's up front and use an Onkyo TX-SR806 with very good results. The 70's operating range is 20-275W per channel, so obviously they would do better with more power, but will work just fine with what you are using. Glad you got them while you could, can't be too many more oppertunities to get these speaks at that price.

How come I never hear about these deals until after the fact. I have bought stuff from Newegg in the past and they do send emails. Just not these things. Ug!Things are more like they are now than they ever will be!

polkfan, I think this particular deal is still running. I just used it yesterday. Grab that code and go to newegg and put one of them in your cart and enter the code (you'll have to have a newegg account) and see if it still works. Remember this is only for the cherry, not the black.
wutadumsn, glad to hear that. I didn't think it'd be a problem, knowing how passive home theater speakers work, but I was a little worried that I just wouldn't have enough power to move all four of those woofers well.
Guys I'm thinking really hard about this psw10 of mine... It may see ebay pretty soon so I can get a psw505 while they're going cheap. Or I'll just save up and get a DSW micropro. -
polkfan, Not sure what the deal is, I signed up for an account and requested E-mail alerts and I get atleast 5 or 6 a week. I usually post the deals related to Polk speakers here on the forum, as others do, so check the "Deals of the Day" thread for information on that.
wet, The 505 is a steal at $250 and would be a huge improvement over the PSW10. The DSW series is a much more musical sub and is a good choice as well.

Holy god these speakers are awesome!!
10,000% improvement over the little Aiwa speakers. I can actually turn the receiver up about halfway and still have clarity and volume without distortion.
I'm pleasantly impressed with the little PSW10 as well. It's not, obviously, going to supply any intense tactile bass, but with the built in crossover knob rolled down (from close to the max 120hz) to around 85-90hz and the volume around 50%, it is surprisingly musical. The Monitor 70's deal with bass very well- once again not extremely tactile especially with the low RMS of my receiver, but very musical, so I am letting them take most of the bass and keeping the PSW10 for that occasional room rumble. I guess they have to break in, too... Mm I taste the sound.
So glad I bought these speakers, and so glad for that crazy person who donated a perfectly working PSW10 to Goodwill.
I might just save up until I can pick up an SVS sub for the really low lows... Those cylinder ones really appeal to me, as my home entertainment system is squeezing into a pretty tight corner- the monitor 70's are right up alongside the TV and stand so that it looks like this-
[][42"][], and then the sub, and then the wall, with less than an inch between each piece. I pulled the speakers forward enough to give them about 6" from the wall in the back, and slid the TV forward on the stand so it is flush with the front of the grills... it actually looks pretty good. And OH THE SOUND. I'm going to go watch Iron Man. -
Awesome man, glad you are happy. I love my Monitor setup, and IMHO they are the best bang for the buck Polk speakers put there. Have fun with Ironman, it is one of my favorites for showing off my system.

LOL, hey I just find the deals and post em, my involvement ends there. If that's the case though, I have a few people in here I can hold responsible for my lack of money, lol.

Sounds like a plan. Your Kenwood, obviously, can power the M70s--as said above--they're pretty efficient. The 4070 is a lower level Kenwood for its year if I'm not mistaken. Kenwoods used to go up to the 9000 series and then leap to the flagship model often close to 2000 dollars. I had an old 9000 series which was VERY powerful..an early Dolby prologic AVR. The Kenwood sound is a bit thin compared to other AVRs not much bass and it can be a bit harsh on the high end...but a lot of that depends on the speakers its used with. In any case, it will do you until you can afford to upgrade to a newer AVR. When that time comes we'll still be here!
Enjoy.
