CD - Chet Atkins: Certified Guitar Player

chetatkins_cd.jpg

Description: On May 15, 1987, a group of A-list musicians gathered to celebrate the enormous influence that Chet Atkins had on their lives and careers. These top entertainers came from rock, country and pop genres, and they performed with Chet and an all-star band. Joining Chet are Mark Knopfler, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Michael McDonald, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Note: This CD is a live recording.

2. I'll See You In My Dreams – instrumental with Mark Knopfler, Chet Atkins
3. Walk of Life – Mark Knopfler, Chet Atkins
4. Dream – The Everly Brothers, Chet Atkins
5. Bye, Bye, Love – The Everly Brothers, Chet Atkins
6. Wake Up Little Susie – The Everly Brothers, Chet Atkins
7. Why Worry – The Everly Brothers, Chet Atkins, Mark Knopfler
8. Precious Memories – Emmylou Harris, Chet Atkins

13. Island in the Sea – Willie Nelson, Chet Atkins
14. Sunrise – Chet Atkins, David Pack
15. Imagine – Chet Atkins, Mark Knopfler
16. I Still Can't Say Goodbye – Chet Atkins
17. Corrine, Corrrina -- ensemble

Running Time: 59 minutes.

I was just flipping through the channels tonight and stumbled across these guys jammin'. I believe I was listening to the song "Imagine" and I really dug it. No singing, just guys playin' instruments and havin' fun. Nice.

Anybody have this CD? I'd like to get it but I was wondering whether it was a bad recording or not.

PBS had this program on the other night as a fund raiser. Sounded great over HDTV on the 1.2TL's. I don't have the CD but if I join at the $100.00 level I would get the DVD and the CD...very tempting.

I can't recall ever hearing his name before catching the tale end of the PBS program. I had no idea he influenced and had signed so many great talents. You learn something everyday.

Chet Atkins is a monster guitar player and you can really tell he influenced Knopfler's playing. One of his releases that stands out from my collection is him and Les Paul. Damn if I can remember the title, however.

I have not heard it but I bet the CD with Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel is good. They each can hold their own.

Found it (finally). Only took me 12 years. Was able to score a brand new copy too. I hope the recording is as good as it was the night I listened to it (old system had the TV sound going through the rig).

I got a kick out of this comment. I think this dude misunderstood when Tom said, "I can't recall ever hearing his name". Oh well, Polkersince85 is long gone from this forum.

I saw the above picture of Chet Atkins previously this year. His hands caught my attention, especially the left hand. Chet's hands appear to have aged much more than the rest of him. From so much guitar playing I wonder?

He was in the spotlight for a long time, but seemed to just fade away at a time when country music changed. He was an icon for a long time.

A week ago, I posted a YouTube video in the "Listening Thread" of Glenn Campbell singing "Gentle on My Mind" with a circle of Nashville stars. A few of the stars mentioned above influenced by Chet Atkins are in this circle and Atkins is also playing.

    This is a great video.

Harry, I'm embarrassed to say I have not checked much of it out, nor do we go to many shows. I have done some choral recording in a few different studios around town, though, including RCA Studio B on Music Row.
My parents lived in Muscle Shoals, AL, so we've spent a lot of time down there, too. One of our favorite places to eat is right next door to the Fame Recording Studio...but I've never been inside of it.

Well, the CD came in (albeit a little late). I'll give it a spin tonight.

*fingers crossed that the recording is as good as what I heard that night, 12 years ago*

So, I gave it a listen tonight. First off and foremost? There was some great talent up on that stage that night. The music was very enjoyable. The entertainment just simply put you in a good mood. Chet is that guy that you would want to be around at a gathering. He's got that rare gift of humor that you will pay attention to when he's talking.....you don't want to miss anything!

With that said, the recording is not as good as what was broadcast that night. While it was live and the recording is really nice on certain songs? Some of the songs, I had to fast forward through.

I can't remember the song but it was one of Mark's. The tempo was so damned fast, that I could not enjoy the music. It's like they were playing 20% faster than they should have been. They didn't sound like the Chipmunks or anything like that but it was so annoying that I simply could not listen. A couple of other songs, the mic for the singers were too far away or turned down too much. It wasn't an equal blend. I could deal with that but not the fast speed. That's just annoying. Heck, I'll turn off some of my all time favorite songs when the radio stations do this. It drives me buckin' fonkers!

3 songs sounded incredible/performance was awesome/band was TIGHT and will definitely get regular rotation. Some of it was a little too "old school" for me but the album was worth those 3 songs and the one that caught my ear to begin with. That being the song, "Imagine". No words. Just music. Music made by some of the greatest musicians that have stomped this blue marble.

My apologies for not going into detail like I normally do. I didn't want to take notes this time. I just wanted to enjoy the concert from start to finish. Overall? It put me in a good mood (not that I was in a bad one before....just sayin'). Was the recording what I expected? Eh, not so much but definitely not a disaster. What was broadcast over the airwaves (or satellite) that night sounded better. With that said, I enjoyed listening to it. I learned about some new tunes that (as mentioned) will get some regular rotation and as a whole?

It was a good experience. I can see why so many people were influenced by Chet.

Nope. I prefer physical music. This was something that I wanted to keep and it was only about 10 bucks (if memory serves), shipped to my door.

Trust me when I say that I have many CD's and LP's that I have paid 4-6 times that amount just to listen to one song. 10 bucks was a bargain to me and just a drop in the bucket to what I have spent overall on my music collection. 🎶

I am afraid when I finally get my Vega G2 up and running that my wallet is going to hate me. For now, I am limited to a set of BT headphones listening to Quobuz for new music.....and I only listen to that when I mow the jungle.

One thing I love about buying physical music is that you are not constantly flipping through music. Years ago, I purchased an album from DCC (an album I already had) but I wanted better. I wanted the best possible recording available (without going into Uber dollars).

What I got was an album from Bonnie Raitt called, "Luck of the Draw".

I purchased this album for one song only because I wanted the best of the best. I wanted to hear, "I can't make you love me". Why? I kept hearing unwanted artifacts within the original recording.

Well, I still hear them and I will chaulk that down to either recording errors, problems within the recording studios, not paying attention or just plain....it doesn't matter. The DCC recording sounds phenomenal but has the same unwanted artifacts, regardless of where they originated from.

Back to my point. The reason I love physical music is that as I listen? I discover more music. Great music. Music that I have not heard before that is simply sublime to experience. This is something that one does not always get when flipping through on Tidal, Qoboz, Apple or Amazon.

On this very album is a song, which so happens to be the title of the album. I had never heard it. Until I bought the album...

I may not like the intro like I do other songs I hold dear to my heart but it's one that I start singing in the cab of my truck as I travel down the highway.

It's in the luck of the draw...

You do get that with streaming but physical music can give you the same thing. Many times at a better sound (depending on one's setup/recording/playback abilities, of course).

Then there is the fact that much of my music is simply not available on streaming. Just ask Rick, Trey or Troy. They all know full well that physical media sometimes is not available on streaming. You can't even make a copy of it.

I have many, many, many albums like this. Not all of them are special. Some of them, I truly wish I had just saved my money on, TBT. But....and yes, there is a but...

Those albums I have that are only experienced in my listening room because there is no other way to get them?

    Priceless.

And my ears thank me profusely at times.....like when I listen to the last song on this album....

Chet is known for his time in Nashville, but he was born and lived in Luttrell, TN when he was young, about 50 miles from where I live. I worked at a railroad in Knoxville with Chet's nephew who also lived in Luttrell. One day he brought an old guitar to work that Chet had given him to inspire him to learn to play. Chet had signed his name on it. David played it for us but he was no Chet Atkins. :) David got killed at the railroad shop where I worked not too long after that. I always wondered what happened to that old guitar.
