Are these LPs clean enough? Here are some very cool pics of vinyl grooves.

That is cool. I used to work with Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) when I worked in NASA's parts analysis. There is a fascinating world beyond what the eye can resolve.

We should all have a SEM to verify that our records and CDs are really clean.

What would be really cool is to show an actual stylus tracking the groove.

I don't know anything about what I am seeing - but I can tell that there seems to be a lot more bumps in the records grooves.....the CD image looks sterile.

Long ago there were nice micrographs (not SEMs, though, just regular light micrographs) published of the cannon shots on the (in)famous Telarc 1812 Overture LP. I have yet to find them online, though.

What I always dig is how the information for each channel is recorded on one side of the groove. Nifty ****...

Tell ya what, if you can get your vinyl clean, it is an excellent medium...

actually, stereo records have the grooves both vertically and horizontally (laterally) modulated to encode stereo information. Part of the reason mono recordings are quieter than stereo is that there is no vertical track information to worry about (not just the cancelling effect of out of phase noise in the two channels).

    Here's a quick synopsis:
