Old Onkyo Problems

I'm posting this question for a friend of mine. He has an old(84 or so) Onkyo Integra amp, I'm pretty sure it was a high dollar model in it's time(complete with 15? band onkyo eq, twin tape deck, and seperate tuner) but he tells me that it shuts down at about 50% volume. He wanted to know if anyone knew the problem or how to fix it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I guess it should be noted that i remember him hooking 4 ohm car audio stuff up to it in the early 90's(high school days)... and I'm pretty sure that wasn't good for it. I actually saw it blow smoke once...lol..

Thanks for any replies in advance....

I think you may have already answered your own question. :D

Was it a M504 Integra by chance?

I'm not sure of the model number but it was a pretty nice receiver back when 500 dollars was one hell of a system.

It still works...but I told him his best bet would be to have a nice funeral and bury it. The eq might still be nice...

I still have a Kenwood from '89 that will smoke most Stereo receivers around today 1000 dollars and under....works great....tons of power....an honest 130w x 2 channels and a lot more than that into 4 ohms! Hasn't really aged much in 21 years...

I'm sure a few upgrades wouldn't hurt it. But I swear it doesn't sound that different than it did over two decades ago when Kenwood could actually make an amp...not a primo amp but a good one!

    Ibrew,
If it still works, there is probably just a minor problem somewhere. Depending on the model, it might be very worthwhile for your buddy to take it to a qualified technician and have it serviced. At the very least, he could sell it 'as-is' with disclosure about the problems. There are many people who will buy up stuff that needs repair and flip them.
