FALL back, SPRING ahead (1 hour)...that's the phrase--or something like that.

As for me, China has no such thing...no time adjustments, and a country slightly larger in size than the U.S. has ONE TIME ZONE from Beijing to Tibet?

Because everyone 'must' be on Capital (Imperial) time!

Try that one on for size.

Back in the Communist days, Russia (USSR) used to only have one time zone, and it's a hell of a lot bigger than China.

As for why we do it... I'm not convinced there's a reason anymore, BUT it's a nice reminder that time as we think of it is just an illusion :)
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Good point...and also quite true! So yeah time is a relative and cultural thing.

    no, that's leap year.

It's, I believe, to save electricity because of lights being turned on an hour later in the summer. In the winter, it wouldn't matter because that hour of daylight would be at the opposite end of the day.

I've read that this clock changing was started by some power proud governor that said he could make his underlings change their clocks with that old because it'll make more time reason. It was a drunken bet with a drinking buddy it said.

Another all together different reason says it was just for farmers concerns.

No matter what, I personally have hated it all my life!!

That's bull. Yes, some time zones were combined (i.e. for Baltic republics and Ukraine, which are within 2 different zones, but were on Moscow time), but not all of them. How do I know? I lived there.

I love daylight savings time. I also thought it had something to do with kids not having to walk to school or the bus in the dark in the mornings. I don't remember where I got this but whatever the reason, I like it.

I remember travelling out to the Kashgar (Kashi) in the very Western reaches of Xinjiang province in June 1994, and since things are based on Beijing (in the very east) time as you noted, it was light out at like 11pm at night (we were there right around the summer solstice).

Since one of our time zones isn't playing this game(MT), it does seem pretty silly.
Are there no farms in Colorado?

I think daylight savings time was extended by the Bush administration for that reason.

As far as I know, the only places not playing this game are Arizona and some parts of Indiana (?). Not sure about the latter, but I remember my cousin lived in Arizona for a year and during the summer we were only two hours off as opposed to three during standard time.

The walking to school argument never made sense to me. Standard time is what we have in the winter, and the sun is up earlier in standard time. If we were always on standard time, it would be "daylight" early all the time; daylight savings time makes it daylight "later."

It sure would seem that way. Who knows what was in his mind at the time.

Actually, that makes little sense. My daughter walks to the bus at 6:40 am, and has just started getting some light at that time. Now it will be dark again.

Lots of farms and ranchers in Colorado, and we are on the DST.

I don't get why it is such a big deal. I like it because I won't have to drive home in the dark, but the day still has 24 hours, so what is the big deal?

Yes, most of Arizona and most of Indiana do not participate in this time shift game.

I think Arizona is the only state left that doesn't follow DST. I'm pretty sure Indiana finally got the whole state on board a few years ago.

DST may be fine for other areas, but here in AZ the last thing you want is more daylight when it's 105 out.

AZ is now on PRK time. We are 3 hours behind the East Coast until November. Thank you.

Yea, you're right. Indiana finally got on the wagon in 05 or 06. Was a pain when I lived there. Time Zones were a mess back then in the state. The Northwest part of the state, near Chicago, was in the Central Time Zone. So were some counties in the Southwest part of the state. They both observed DST. The rest of the state was in the Eastern Time Zone but did not observe DST, except for a couple of counties in the Southeast, that did observe DST.

I think Hawaii also does not observe DST.

    Thanks Michael,
That was a great read. I saved it.

I see it's devided still as to it's pros and cons. I'm a night person so that's why I hate it.If I worked a normal job all my life it might not have been a PIA but IT WAS.
