All of the above are a not obsolete... less common perhaps, but still in use.

Obsolete are the Trans-Atlantic ocean liners, silent film, leaded gasoline, red dye #5(food coloring), the Grammophone and the steam powered locomotive/automobile

I don't think cassette and 3.5" floppy disc are obsolete yet, since both (in blank form) can still be purchased. In fact, TDK reported a surge in blank cassette sales last year. 8-track? Perhaps, but Cheap Trick released its last album on 8-track last year and the demand was so "huge" that the 8-track version will be in its 3rd "pressing".

How about 5.25" floppy disc? Or MiniDisc? I still use MD and I suppose blank MDs can still be purchased, although I cleaned out my local Target's stock of blank Sony MDs a while back.

Reel-to-reel? This was spotted at the 2/27/2010 Head-fi meet near San Francisco....

What is the definintion of 'obsolete'?

In the computer industry, it is when the OEM announces "end of support" - meaning after an item has been declared as "end of availability" (no longer sold) to when the product is no longer supported for service or replacement.

After that the user is SOL for finding parts and may have to resort to 3rd party service contractors to find spare parts or technicians who know how to service the item.

Sure, an item may still be in working order - like my SuperBeta player, but Sony no longer supports the item or sells parts for it. I *might* be able to find a service store someplace that has parts for it and a technician that *might* do work on it, but there are no guarantees - once my player is broke, it may not be repairable.

To me - that is obsolete - from a commercial commodity standpoint.

There are steam locomotives that still run - like the Cumbres and Toltec RR up in Northern New Mexico for tourist trips - but the service and repair of that would come from custom parts and specialists specifically retained to keep THAT 'product' working.

H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music.

Keypunch machines & punch cards. 300 & 9600 baud modems. Communications multiplexers. U-links for communications patching. Patch panels for Telco operators.

Albeit all of the above have evolved into something better.

I sold a Nikon FM on CL a couple of months ago. Given the number of responses,

I don't think that you can call something obsolete that is still being produced.

Still making them Mike. There's a little store in South Philly that still sells new and used typewriters. Many doctor's offices still use them to file paper claims even though the Fed's are phasing out all paper claims.

Still around. They make a small digital music player that plugs into the cigarette lighter, has a usb port for your media, and an FM transmitter to play over your radio.

Most of these things aren't exactly obsolete IMO.

Especially vinyl, as you mentioned. Many new artists are still releasing their music on vinyl...plus many older releases are being re-released on vinyl.

There's also a booming industry for turntables and turntable accessories in general.

CB Radio's? Those are barely obsolete. Police and fireman still use CB radio's in all of their vehicles, and use it as their general form of communication.

Nearly all truck drivers still use CB radio's as well.
